Aww, I used to come home from school and watch Merv with my Mom. She and her sister loved Jeapardy too. That was pretty much all they watched on TV unless an old movie such as The Harvey Girls was on.

R.I.P. Merv Griffin.

A deeply closeted homosexual right winger (those two thing so often go hand in hand!) who created THE most famous "waiting around" jingle in all of human history.

Also, was the major thorn in that vulgarian Donald Trump's side, so that's a plus for Merv.

Together again with Arthur Treacher.

Eva Gabor was his "beard", not Zsa Zsa. Eva ("Green Acres") is already gone.

Years ago I had the pleasure and delight to be in his company at a business function. He was warm, charming, gracious and generous. And I loved his talk show too.

His name is similar to mine, so he's all right by me.

I actually did enjoy his talk show - a gentler, kinder time.

I hope he was able to be happy.

I loved that show, too.

I will never, EVER forget seeing Soft Cell on there doing "Tainted Love."

I'm sorry I don't pray that way!

He published a tell-nothing memoir a few years ago.

If only he had left us an unexpurgated memoir! What tales those pages could tell!

A friend of my dad's was usually invited to his parties and always came back with the kindest stories about him. It was clear how much people loved and respected him.

Sad to hear this news.

This is such sad news. I too remember watching his chat show with my nana.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

I watched Merv alot. He had fascinating guests and was an intelligent, witty, and involved host/interviewer.

I also had a boss when I was a resort guesthouse chambermaid one summer. She was an elderly woman and part of my room/board arrangement was to have one meal a day with her in her living quarters in the main building. We also watched Merv during dinner and she always fretted about his choice of suits. She would say to the tv: "Merv, why do they put you in plaid. Plaid is not good on you." *sigh* "Honestly, Merv. You should have a talk with your wardrobe people."...and she MEANT it. It cracked me up.

RIP Merv. You entertained us on the screen and behind the scenes.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?
