I guess I'm too old for the Main Board#1
Posted: 7/20/07 at 2:41pm
Anyone else get that feeling?

I posted a link to a clip of some of Broadway's "best and brightest ever" (along with a few flavors of the moment)... and got NO LOVE.

True it's the kitschy '80s, and it's "Night of 100 Stars" (remember that?)... but it's also kind of incredible to see all of them in one ADD/OCD medley together.

We'll never see the likes of this again, all on one stage in one "musical moment."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=14E7wk4p-O8&mode=related&search=

Nobody cared. Nobody commented.

If a Broadway legend falls in the forest, and nobody hears it...

It didn't have Idina or the Spring Awakening kids in it, so I guess I was doomed from the start.

But it does have (in order of appearance):

Carol Channing (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes)
Robert Preston (The Music Man)
Robert Klein (They're Playing Our Song)
Lucy Arnaz (They're Playing Our Song)
Celeste Holm (Bloomer Girl)
Alfred Drake (Oklahoma!)
Alexis Smith (Follies)
Pearl Bailey (St. Louis Woman)
Bea Arthur (Mame)
Ellen Burstyn (Same Time Next Year) - not singing
Charles Grodin (Same Time Next Year) - not singing
Lauren Bacall (Woman Of the Year)
Diahann Carroll (No Strings)
Alison Smith (Annie)
Dorothy Loudon (Annie)
Sandy Duncan (Peter Pan)
Treat Williams (The Pirates of Penzance)
Kaye Ballard (The Pirates of Penzance)
George S. Irving (The Pirates of Penzance)
David Garrison (The Pirates of Penzance)
Maureen McGovern (The Pirates of Penzance)
Patrick Cassidy (The Pirates of Penzance)
Richard Kiley (Man of La Mancha)
Jerry Orbach (42nd Street)
Liv Ullman (Anna Christie) - not singing
Jane Alexander (6 RMS RIV VU) - not singing
Frank Langella (Dracula) - sings Broadway Melody
John Rubenstein (Children of a Lesser God) - sings Broadway Melody)
Phyllis Frelich (Children of a Lesser God) - not singing
Coleen Dewhurst (Moon For the Misbegotten) - not singing
Julie Harris (Belle of Amherst) - not singing
Ann Miller (Sugar Babies)
Mickey Rooney (Sugar Babies)
Mary Martin (South Pacific)
Ethel Merman (Annie Get Your Gun)

I've been dying to watch it since You first posted it. I opened it and saw the first five seconds. But I'm at work and had to shut it off. I would have given you LOVE tonight, I'm sure.

Who was it that said, when referring to that event, "If a bomb dropped on this building, Pia Zadora could get a job"?

At this point, I think a toddler is too old for the main board. It's awful over there.

I did a little googling and am able to answer my own question:

At the "Night of 100 Stars" at Radio City Music Hall, where more than two hundred of America's best-known performing artists gathered, Steve Allen quipped: "If a bomb were to fall on this place right now, it would be a big break for Pia Zadora."

I hope it stays up long enough!

It's almost surreal to me... to see them all singing together in a "great wash of star power," doing the numbers that made them famous.

Okay, I feel better now to know that some of you are giving it a whirl.

EDIT: Madbrain, that's hilarious.

That's really cool. I can't watch it now, but I'll be checking it out as soon as I get home from work. Thanks for posting about it here, b12b!

If you're too old B12B, then I'm a fossil. I do believe with the exception of perhaps one or two, that I've seen everyone of those people perform live, in either summer stock or B'way. Remember when summer stock was a big deal. I know you spent some of your youth in Kansas, did you ever go to Starlight Theatre in KC?

You're not too old Best12Bars! Give people a chance. I didn't even see this thread because it went off the board quickly. THANK YOU for the clip!

Don't forget Maureen McGovern in the Pirates of Penzance portion.

I haven't been to Splash since Jesus was in high school, but they used to show the Fashion Parade of Famous Ladies from Night of a 100 Stars. Wherelse can you see, in the span of 4 minutes, Judith Jameson doing some freakydeaky dancing Shit and Danielle Brisbois on rollerskates???

JAG---I did go to summer stock at Starlight in Kansas City. I saw The Wizard of Oz with Margaret Hamilton and the Hudson Brothers (Maggie was an old pen pal and acquaintance of mine from grade school, so I arranged to meet with her again after the show!) I saw "Grease" with Eddie Mekka and Andrea McArdle. I saw Ain't Misbehavin' with "Lamont" from Sanford & Son... I also saw Ginger Rogers in Anything Goes, many others...

I also DID summer stock myself for three seasons in Michigan at the Barn Theatre, with Marin Mazzie, Tom Wopat, Becky Ann Baker, Barbara Marineau and a slew of others from soaps to film to Broadway.

Oh, my GOD, robbiej, I remember that!!!

I wasn't in NY, but I think Splash's "sister bar" in L.A. was Revolver. I used to go there a lot in my club crawlin' days, and that video was one of my favorites. They used to play it to Cher's remix of "One By One." Worked perfectly with Jameson and Brisbois roller skates!

And sueleen---You're SO right.

And Gypsy---I'm adding in Maureen! Sorry I left her out. I was typing fast (for me).

Loved this clip besty. Especially Merman and Alexis Smith.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

*hangs head in shame*

I love her too, sueleen!

I'm glad many of you are tuning in on the OT Board!

I felt like I'd posted it in Swedish or something on the Main.

And no, it's not "grand art," more like the Hall of the Presidents from Disneyworld in a Bob Mackie gown... but there were times when I was watching it that I thought, WOW, they're all together here, crossing the stage in a Big Broadway Parade that we aren't going to see again, ever.

*cries*

EDIT: Dark_Angel---You'll have to speak up, sonny. In my GOOD ear.
