How do you deal with the disturbing phenomenon with extremely small children who hate gays or are taught to hate gays?

Kidding aside, bigotry is learned....you're not born with it. If you are dealing with homophobic childen, blame the parents...not the child. Children learn from example.

Unfortunately, no this is not a phenomenon. Designating it a phenomenon implies that it is something out of the ordinary - and homophobia is certainly NOT out of the ordinary. Not in American culture, and definitely not in much of the rest of the world. And, of course it manifests itself early - the children are being carefully taught.

It's all well and good to feel the solidarity of the general liberal bent on these boards - certain posters notwithstanding. BUT, the reality is, this is one of the last bastions of hatred that is tolerated on a societal level - and it is that very thing that many spend much time trying to rise above and/or fight against.

And just one little private note to Muscle - has it occurred to you that other gays might not dislike you JUST because you're gay? There are many aspects to one's existence that people respond to besides their sexuality.

If I could get away with murder, Prussian Blue would be toward the top of my list.
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

The original post asked about extremely small children who hate gays (which I define to be toddler/preschool age).

How on earth would an "extremely small child" know you're gay, unless you're doing something which you probably shouldn't be doing in front of random "extremely small children" anyhow, whether you're straight or gay?

Most "extremely small children" don't express hatred toward strangers; shyness, perhaps fear, but hatred?

a lot of small kids tend to toss around "faggy!" as an adjective and "gay" to denote something "bad". "Your mom didn't make you Mac-N-Cheese? That is so GAY!"

You've got to be taught to hate and fear
You've got to be taught from year to year
It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught

kelzama, i can understand where you're coming from, but the child i know doesn't seek out gay people and tell them they're going to hell, but she does talk about how gay people are going to hell. just beacuse someone has never said anything directly to a gay person doesn't mean they aren't homophobic.

i have to agree with nealb1 & johnboy2. Homophobia, just like racism, is taught. you can almost bet that someone close to this child is teaching them this.

Careful the things you say, Children will listen
-Into the Woods

That kind of thinking is taught, I say that you treat them as you would want to be treated. If it is true that we are talking about a small child or children then hopefully they will be able to learn love and acceptance the same way they learned the hate! Treating them with hate back will have them growing up believing the lies they have been taught.

I just hope that when they become older, they learn to think for themselves. When people are young, they usually just believe in what their parents believe. Many of the people I knew who spouted their parents' and church's homophobic crap grew out of it when they got to high school and matured.

There are also a lot of people who decide they still want to be homophobic. But as mesmerized said, just treat them nicely. Being rude towards them will only give them more reason to be hateful.
