Does anyone have this recording? Was it made on CD or just LP?

I have an LP transfer a friend did for me. There isn't a CD (as far as I know). Judi acts the hell out of the role, although it isn't pretty by ANY means (which is intended).

It's on iTunes, the version with Judi Dench.

It's listed as Cabaret - Complete Recording of the Score.

I hope that's what you meant, if not I apologize for wasting time lol.

Nono Judi is in two recordings--both originating from London.

She was int he Hal Prince original production when it premiere din London in, I believe 1968 and many think she was the best Sally of any of those early Prince productions. There's video of her singign Don't Tell Mama on some awards show from that time out there.

Then she played Fraulein's part in the COmplete Score recording JAY records put out in the mid 90s

In the Original London Cast, Dench played Sally.
On the Complete Recording, Dench plays Fraulein Schneider.

Does anyone actually know what they're talking about? The London cast album was absolutely released on CD - I'm looking at it now. Sony West End was the label.

The original London cast (w/ Judi Dench as Sally, Lila Kedrova as Schneider) was briefly on CD on the Sony West End label in the mid 1990's. It was one of 10 OLC's they reissued. (Sony SMK 53494) It has been out of print over 10 years now.

It is not in the same class as the original Broadway recording although Dench is a great Sally. But like many Lonon cast albums it has some rickety orchestral playing and doesn't have the polish of Columbia's OBCR.

The Jay 2-CD studio set has Dench as Scheider and as with other Jay Masterworks series is not complete, supplemented by alternate songs but is played in strictly correct theatre style.

Yes, I have the CD. I like the album quite a bit and don't think it has any rickety orchestral playing. In fact, one of my favorite bits in the orchestration, the brass downward run at the end of Wilkommen, is completely buried on the OCR, whereas it's there in all its glory on the London album. I really like Judi Dench on it, and while Lila Kedrova is no Lenya (no one was or is Lenya), she's quite good, as is Peter Sallis.

Those SOny West End recordings were released for all of 2 seconds--very frustrating. I ended up with some like the "london" Company but others I just never saw a copy of

I have to say this is probably one of my fav. recordings of the show! The sound is not perfect, abit krispy which worked really well, showing some kind of age and depth to it.
THe cast is really good. I only know Judi Dench as Sally who is just wonderful as Sally! When she is DEFO not a singer and can only hold one note briefly, her voice contains so much soul and acting in it, you can completely visualize her character by just listening to her!
The Emcee is REALLY good, very comical.

Overall, I love this recording and I believe if you're a fan of the show, it's a MUST have!

I have Bar Mitvah Boy, Cabaret, Company, Sweet Charity, and Passion Flower Hotel. Also listed in the booklet are Anne Of The Green Gables, the Topol Fiddler On The Roof, The Beggar's Opera, No, No, Nanette, Charlier Girl, and Salad Days. In the Cabaret booklet, On The Town (with Elliot Gould) is listed, but I know that one didn't come out (I have it on LP and was eagerly awaiting the CD). How many of the above list came out, I don't know.

I love Barry Dennen's Emcee.

For those who ae unfamiliar with Dennen, he was Pilate in both the original concept recording and the movie of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, and Mendel in the movie of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.

Eric - The reason there is that Sony Canada only released the first batch (ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, COMPANY, BAR MITZVAH BOY and CABARET) here. Sony U.S. did not release these at all. Footlight and a few other specialty stores brought them in as imports.

THe 2nd batch had some more interesting titles: SALAD DAYS, PASSION FLOWER HOTEL, BEGGARS' OPERA, CHARLIE GIRL, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, NO NO NANETTE and SWEET CHARITY but I was only able to track down a few of these thru E-bay. (The London FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has been released here in the Columbia Broadway series.)

One other London cast that was supposed to be included was ON THE TOWN but after it had been pressed and shipped they had to recall it: Instead of using the London cast tape, they had used the Bernstein studio recording with Walker, Comden and Green. They were going to re-release it with the correct recording but the series was dropped before that happened.

I have the cd issue. I bought it london a while back.

I like it. Nothing to get crazy about. Dench's Sally is good.

Ultimately she comes off a bit miscast.

Not exactly "Funny" and not "Everyone," even Judi has her critics.

As for myself, I can only judge by the recording.
