I think this movie has gone too far. I saw it and didn't think it was that great.

I know we all dread it, but I think that it'll come to Broadway and be the next Wicked.

Be the next Wicked in that it will annoy the heck out of people over the age of 16 who know anything about musical theatre, or in that it will sell out every night and make billions?

Yes. Plain and simply: yes.

Edit: Well, I'm only 15 and Wicked bugs the heck out of me because I actually took the time to listen to something else, like Herman or Sondheim. I hate the people who say: It'll introduce kids to theater. Bull. The only way Wicked fans get introduced to theater is if they loose the Rush or lotto, etc. and are forced to see something else, in which they will sit through unhappily because they don't get to see a person being lifted up by a cherry picker or someone who doesn't know how to sing scream their lungs out and sing pop songs. The only way to get kids introduced to theater is to show them real theater. Start them with Hello Dolly or something simple (no offense) like that. Nothing as complicated as Sondheim in the begining, just real theater. They are lied to by thinking that "Getcha Head in the Game" is a musical style song since it's in a musical. Listen to "I Am What I Am" or anything that is a true musical. That is the ONLY way you can get kids introduced to theater. *Just my opinion* Updated On: 7/31/06 at 06:57 PM

psh. It isn't even on Broadway and it already has more hate-posts than Wicked does. Does that mean it will make more money as well?

But really, I can't ever see this little show being as big as Wicked. Why not see Grease instead? Or Footloose? Or any of the other hundereds of "high school musicals" that flopped?

You guys have no idea how upset I am.

My school is listed in the other schools that have the rights.

At the end of this past year it was announced we were probably going to do Les Miserables and it's been my dream for YEARS to be in that show. I've wanted to play Mme. Thenardier since the 8th grade and even though I probably wouldn't have gotten it, I had a chance.

To have that replaced by HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL?

Are you KIDDING ME?

Oh boy- I can't even say how badly I feel for you. And I thought I was upset because my school was doing Oklahoma. I'd love to hear how it goes though. If there were any changes from the movie. Isn't being a guninea pig fun?

Complain? Man- I'd to a full on boycott if I found out my school was doing that. But yes, gustof is right- you should come up with plausible reasons why you school should not pursue that particular venture. And they might just listen to you. If not- there's always community theatre.

Her (or his) sad story was like what I was saying. It's horrible that this monstrosity is taking over real theater like that. Les Miserables is a spectacular musical, only to be replaced by crap like that. Now I'm waiting for our music director to pick this crap.

Better not to consider the possibility and jinx yourself. I plan to diss this "thing" at any and every possible and fitting moment this year. Maybe my theatre teacher will take a hint.

yeah I went to a high school where we did really stupid community friendly shows (Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, 1940's Radio Hour, Dames at Sea) and even I could see my HS doing this crap. I'm soo glad I'm gone. Yeah Katurian I would have found elsewhere to perform. But I wouldn't have left without making a huge scene of my disgust :)

I just got back from Second Session at Stagedoor Manor (David in Company re: And the 1st Licensed Production of High School Musical Goes To.... Yay!) But anyway, yeah they are doing it third session and we knew a while ago. I hate the movie and I think the music is terrible and many of the kids at stagedoor are not at all looking forward to it. But the wonderful director Larry Nye will be directing it, so hopefully it comes out nicely done.

...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

gustoff~ I would re: And the 1st Licensed Production of High School Musical Goes To.... My school has the annoying cycle of repeating shows every 3 years. I would save future genereations the torture.

EDIT: Yes, many non-theatre people seem to love it. I hear about pretty much every day from someone who would otherwise never step foot into a theatre. It's strange how Stagedoor alumni would be excited. Hmmm.

High School Musical is immensely popular with people young and old around here. I've been in discussions with people who say this is their dream show, and when I heard that I did a spit take with my hawaiin punch. Someone please get me out of this town.

Ahhh mine too! of the four years I was there the only show that we did that they hadn't already done was The Importance of Being Earnest and that was because a lot of the seniors that year begged them too...

Town? You may have to leave the country if this continues.

EDIT: That would be such a fun show! I am hoping for Guys and Dolls my senior year. Not Seussical as planned. :P

1. Oh boy, I am definitely going to complain loud and hard whenever any of the teachers involved in selecting this crap are within earshot. And even when they aren't in earshot.

2. I would boycott, but I doubt it would do any good. I'm not exactly the leading lady the show can't go on without. I doubt anyone would even notice if I didn't audition.

If there was good community theatre nearby I would just not audition, but there isn't really, the closest one is more for junior high students and they do children's shows. There's one that's kind of close that I know of and have already recieved word they are doing a play with two teenage girl roles, so.

Right now I'm just praying that it's not what it looks like, really, that the performing arts class is doing it or they bought the rights for next year or... just for fun? I don't know.

I know Katurian and I didn't even get to do it because I was in a production of Aida. But my senior year we conned them into doing Into the Woods...which they had done the Jr. version. But it took a lot of hassling and they clearly didn't like the show. They were just really into that corny simple happy stuff...and they recycled like you wouldn't believe!

Into the Woods would be so fun! Iv'e been begging for Sondheim for a while now. I've never heard of a high school production of Aida. How did it turn out?

Lamenting~ I'm so sorry for your dilemma. But hey- I bet a lot of people will come to see the show! re: And the 1st Licensed Production of High School Musical Goes To.... "There's a sunny side to every situation."

Stagedoor does a lot of great shows.

I was in Follies last year, and Company this year. So I do a lot of Sondheim there, by luck, but there are also many other great shows. High School Musical might give them a bit of a bad name, but hopefully they will see the error in it and not do it again.
