I think Sweeney should definitely do an ensemble number. If they did "Priest," it would seem that the other people are there for nothing (and I wouldn't want to see a shortened "Priest"). They will at least do a bit of "The Ballad."
sweeney should do the opening ballad, segwaying into worst pies in london, hat way you get all 3 nominees singing.althoug i wouldn't rule out "not while i'm around" with patti and mano
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
Personally, I would love to see a "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir"/"The Contest" medley. It showcases the whole cast, with instruments in hand. Patti's tuba, which would get a huge cheer. It's a fun number which showcases everyone's talents.
I'm banking on "The Prologue", though, complete with coffin rising.
I hate when there is a medley. Do a full number. I'd rather see The Ballad..., or Priest. Do one number and not a mini commercial.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
I'd really much rather see the opening ballad performed, that way it showcases all of the actors at least playing their instruments and singing. Not to mention a shortened Priest wouldn't be as good, especially if people didn't understand it out of context, and it doesn't really show off anyone but Patti and Michael (but for all we know that may be exactly what they want to do). I dont get why someone needs to be showcased at all...it isnt going to influence the outcome. Showcasing Patti wont win her the award. Showcasing all three noms from Sweeney will ruin the number as it will need to be pieced together.
I wouldnt be surprised if the choose God That's Good.

I don't know who you were specifically directing that to, if anyone, but I'm just saying it really is an ensemble show, and it would just be great to have at least all the actors up there singing and playing as well. Not to mention the opening ballad is powerful enough to give anyone the chills.
A lot of times, it works out that a number gets chosen to show off who the producers, et al are really pushing for to win, or who might have the best chance.
I hope they do something that the entire cast can be part of in a way more extensive than being musical accompaniment; maybe the opening.
The issue with Jersey Boys performing the 'CD medley' out of context is that, in the show, it actually isn't performed that way. Not to mention (slight spoiler??) that not all four of the main 'boys' are singing on it. They condensed about a half hour of the show in to one roughly five minute track. The same thing happened with the "Early Years" track, which is actually about 40 minutes of exposition cut down to eight.
Otherwise I think people would be constantly asking them to perform "Let's Hang on to What We've Got"... seems to be pretty popular amongst the masses.
I think, especially since JLY has the lead actor nomination, there is no way they WON'T be doing the standard medley. "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" is Frankie's song... and they always cap off with "Who Loves You?" to bring on the entire cast. I think the only possible change would be with the middle song. The only possible substitution I'd see for "Walk Like a Man" MIGHT be "Sherry".

That is what I mean...the awards are already decided by then. I know this happens, but it doesnt make sense to me.
Doing the best number to attract an audience, that I understand.

I agree, it seems kind of moot at that point. Could it have to do with something like "look how great this person is; s/he is even going to perform on the night of the Tonys!" -- at the very least, performance numbers are decided before the votes are finished being cast, right?
Although "Hernando's Hideaway" is the logical choice for The Pajama Game, I wouldn't be surpised if they did "There Once Was a Man".

Maybe it's just an extra ticket-selling point, Emcee... I think everyone agrees that the acting awards are always a slippery slope since they mean diddly squat once an actor leaves the show. But WHILE the actor is still there, you can milk the hell out of it. Might as well flash around your shiny star while you've got him/her.

Though Id love for Sweeney to do Priest because I want to see Cerveris and Patti sing it again, I think they'lldo the opening. Though it doesnt really feature Patti (mano and Cerveris it does though) but it also features the whole idea of John Doyle's direction which is why this show is so amazing to begin with.
Threepenny should do Mac the Knife or Army Song (I just have a great fascination with that song)
