They were boxing up and shipping out all of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's" set and props today. And I got to thinking..
Where do all the props, costumes, sets, special effects pieces, memorabilia, everything go? When a show closes or needs to replace pieces of the show, where does it all go? Auctioned?
Is there some gigantic warehouse where Broadway stuff is stored? Do they ever recycle pieces, fabric for other productions? I'm imagining some gigantic building jammed packed with everything *forgotten* covered in cobwebs but still whispering its magic.
This reminds me of a scene in the TV film "Rainbow", When they ask young Judy if she would like to keep a pair of the "Ruby Slippers" for herself and her answer is "What for? They're just Shoes." I wish I owned a pair of those shoes!

It all goes to the apartment of an incredibly fabulous gay man, and the rest of us spend our entire lives hoping to be invited to a party. For most of us, this will never happen.
And no one grew into anything new, we just became the worst of what we were."
One of the pairs (how many are there?) of ruby slippers is on display at one of the Smithsonians in DC...It's the one with Seinfeld's puffy shirt and the area about Polio. I *think* it's the National Museum of American History.
Back on topic, I would LOVE to know what happens to everything, especially the costumes. A warehouse full of beautiful dresses...and other things, of course. :)
