Where does it all go?

They were boxing up and shipping out all of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's" set and props today. And I got to thinking..

Where do all the props, costumes, sets, special effects pieces, memorabilia, everything go? When a show closes or needs to replace pieces of the show, where does it all go? Auctioned?

Is there some gigantic warehouse where Broadway stuff is stored? Do they ever recycle pieces, fabric for other productions? I'm imagining some gigantic building jammed packed with everything *forgotten* covered in cobwebs but still whispering its magic.

Where does it all go?

It probably varies from show to show.

But if there was a giant warehouse, it would be my dream to explore it and take random props and set pieces. *fantasizes*

"...with everything *forgotten* covered in cobwebs but still whispering its magic."

Sorry to shift the subject, but those are some of the most creative words I've heard. re: Where does it all go?

This reminds me of a scene in the TV film "Rainbow", When they ask young Judy if she would like to keep a pair of the "Ruby Slippers" for herself and her answer is "What for? They're just Shoes."
I wish I owned a pair of those shoes!

Lots of stuff goes on to be used in subsequent productions.

It all goes to the apartment of an incredibly fabulous gay man, and the rest of us spend our entire lives hoping to be invited to a party. For most of us, this will never happen.

So aside from auctions and reusing on tours, none of us seems to know the answer. Quite all right.

Your comments made me smile anyway!

The Chitty kids all got to keep bamboo sticks, so for less important props, cast members might be able to request/steal something.

"I wish I owned a pair of those shoes!"

One of the pairs (how many are there?) of ruby slippers is on display at one of the Smithsonians in DC...It's the one with Seinfeld's puffy shirt and the area about Polio. I *think* it's the National Museum of American History.

Back on topic, I would LOVE to know what happens to everything, especially the costumes. A warehouse full of beautiful dresses...and other things, of course. :)

Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

It gets sold to other producers and theatres, used on a tour, put into storage or thrown out or burned.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
