I'm heading up to New York for a few days at the end of March for StrawHat. I'll be up there Wednesday night through Monday, I think. I want to see as many shows as I can. Unfortunately, I'm totally clueless. The only discount system I am familiar with is the TKTS booth. Would someone please be a dear and talk a bit about my options? How does student rush work? What if the person I'm with isn't a student?
Also, I'd like to maybe hit up a performance at Joe's Pub, or a cabaret of some sort. Does anyone have information on anything like that?
Any other tips (performance related or not) are welcome! I am completely clueless.
Thanks!
--Edited to apologize. I just realized this should probably be on the off-topic board.
For Broadway ticket discounts check: www.broadwaybox.com You can also find out info on Student rush at: www.playbill.com. Sorry I don't have any info on Joe's Pub but am sure someone else will respond.
You have got to see avenue Q. It is truly one of the best shows on broadway. Oh, and student rush works differently at different theatres. The tickets are always 26$ (i think), but theatres offer it at different times. Some let you use it if you buy it the day of. Others let you use it 30 minutes before the show starts only. And others don't even have it. Actually, the roundabout theatre (which will have The Pajama Game and The Threepenny Opera (which looks fabulous)), if you are under the age of 18, gives you tickets half off. I am not 100% sure of all this, but this is how it worked for me in the past.
Here's a tip...some, not all, but some Broadway shows offer "twofers"...two for one discount coupons. They are available at the Times Square Visitor Centre's information booth. I don't know what shows have them....
You do not have to buy two tickets. You can either get two for the price of one, or get one for half price (usually at ALL price levels! Cheaper than TKTS which is only 50 percent off the highest price most times). I saw PHANTOM from a great seat in the mezz last year for like...40 dollars with these coupons.
Go to playbill.com and join the "Playbill Club." It's free and then you will have access to all of their discounts which are often very good.
Also, if you are a student, you can join the Theatre Development Fund (TDF), the group that runs the TKTS booths. Then you'll get notices of discounts by mail and by email. If you're going in March, you have plenty of time to join. As mentioned, be sure to check broadwaybox.com -- check TDF (website link below), playbill.com, and broadwaybox on a regular basis as it gets closer to your trip. Real Broadway fans only pay full price as a LAST resort!
When you get to New York, remember that there is a second TKTS booth downtown at Bowling Green. If you're down that way, it is MUCH less crowded that the Times Square booth.
This website has cabaret listings. Look to the left for the link under the "SHOWS" heading.
Good suggestions TKTS is your best bet....also if you are not seeing a musical, window #5 at TKTS is for plays only and usually just a five minute wait.....The long line which can run 45 mins to an hour is for musicals and.....Big hit shows like Spamalot and Wicked are rarely on TKTS....Go to the New York Times website..... they have a good archive of reviews so you can see which shows might appeal to you.
