I've noticed that a handfull of people have attended advance screenings of RENT. I'm curious to know what the purpose of screening is. Is it to compile audience feedback for possible cuts? If not, what then? Thanks. Updated On: 11/7/05 at 09:25 AM
Test screening: to test a cut of the film on an audience. Usually audience either has a feedback session or fills out a survey or both.
Advance screening: usually begins a limited release. This is to start making back money and to begin word-of-mouth buzz between moviegoers. To start to get the film talked about in households. Many times used as part of promotional purposes - joint with the film and whichever company they're working with.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I went to an advance screening on Sunday Nov. 6 because my boyfriend is a member of the SAG Nominating Committee. The screening is designed to get nominating committee members to consider RENT when nominating actors for the SAG awards.
