Since stephanie got hurt will they fly up kristy cates to understudy the role ?
"what? what is it? do i have something in my teeth? ok lets get this over with : no im not seasick, yes ive always been green, and no i didnt chew grass as a child "
its quite possible that the understudies for the tour are just not ready to go on. If Jenna went on as Elphaba, someone would have to play Nessa as well. This was probably an easier solution.
i'm noting that playbill referred to kristy as "one of the standby's for elphaba" is it a typo or did she get moved up?

I want to write music. I want to sit down right now at my piano and write a song that people will listen to and remember and do the same thing every morning...for the rest of my life. - Jonathan Larson. Tick, Tick...BOOM!
I wouldnt say she is a "horrible" singer, she is though the weakest sung Elphaba I've heard and I have heard Shoshana, Idina, Eden, her, and Stephanie do Defying Gravity..
I think she's a phenomenal singer - I think perhaps because she doesn't scream/yell/shriek and get all riffy, some people might think she's weaker. Also, she's only had the chance to go on twice, and she was amazing for her first time.
I think she has a beautiful voice - a perfect example of what a trained, non-pop musical theater voice should sound like.
Seriously what happened? I've got tkts w my family for Mar 11 if there is a chance Stephanie will be back I want to know ( altho the run is almost sold out in TO I probably can't change) Just so if she really is a weak singer (Kristy) I can let my family know so they don't thing I'm nuts for raving about the show. I got a rep to consider ya know!!(lol)
kristy is amazing and she is just more classicaly trained, but she has the broadway sound, but shoshana is clasically trained also so yeah, but kristy is amazing

Don't be ridiculous. Kristy Cates is fierce. She is one of the finest singers on Broadway. Bernie Telsey and Stephen Schwartz clearly didn't think she was "horrible" when they agreed to cast her.

Great. Just Toronto's luck.

give the girl some credit as its been said earlier in this thread she has only had 2 chances to ever perform the part... the others had many many more to perfect things

You wrote, "Great. Just Toronto's luck." I couldn't agree more. The Toronto audiences should consider themselves lucky to witness Kristy Cates' portrayal of Elphaba.
You also wrote, "I have heard Shoshana, Idina, Eden, her, and Stephanie do Defying Gravity." Are you saying you've heard each lady sing the song, but not seen each lady actually do the role?
I have seen everyone except Stephanie do the role. Each lady brings something entirely different to the character and to the songs, as they should. While Kristy's portrayal strays the most from Idina's in my opinion, I would hardly refer to her or her Elphaba as weak. On the contrary, the subtlety she brings to the role is extraordinary. Subtlety is powerful, not weak.
Indeed. Just Toronto's luck. Though the circumstances which required Miss Cates to have to make the journey to Toronto in the first place are grim, Toronto is very fortunate to get to experience such a wonderful performer. Kristy brings a subtlty and power to the role that I found to be very endearing. Lucky lucky Toronto.

Actually, I didn't write those lines at all.
I'm sure Kristy Cates will do the role well -- it's just disappointing that, after all the hoopla of having Stephanie Block open the tour, she won't be able to perform the first few nights.
