I am listening to "Elaine Stritch At Liberty".... and I was just wondering... does anyone else here absolutely LOVE Elaine Stritch??? I adore her... shes amazing!
I saw "At Liberty" on Broadway and even got to meet her backstage. She is amazing, a true original. She had everyone in the theater in tears by the end of the show and of course she got a HUGE standing ovation. A lot of celebrities were in the audience too and they were completely in awe of her. I saw her in the movie BROADWAY, THE GOLDEN AGE and she is hilarious, as usual. SO glad she won the Tony, too bad they cut her speech.! Do get a copy of the "At Liberty" DVD!!

I got into a huge argument with my friend the other day.
He is also a huge Sondheim fanatic, but he said that her rendetion of "The Ladies Who Lunch" is terrible.
I, obviously, argued that it is as close to perfection as you can get with that song, and that that song belongs to her as much as "Over the Rainbow" belongs to Judy Garland or "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" belongs to Tony Bennet.

The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
While I am sure many singers could make the song sound better, nobody could give it that sarcastic, bitchy, witty touch that is so Elaine and so right for that particualr song.

Is it just me, or doesnt anyone else not like her singing voice. Im not sure if it used to be better, but in at Liberty she was flat alot. I loved the monologues in that show though. She is hilarious. A true legend
Again, she never claimed to have a great voice. But it is her rendition of the songs that makes her special. Remember in the theater many people have succeeded with less than great voices when they are able to convey emotions through their rendition of a song. But yes, her voice is not great at all.

A few years ago I had the privilege of seeing Bea Arthur and Jack Klugman sing Small World. It wasn't about voices - it was about the soul they brought to the piece. It was one of the most emotional things I have ever seen in a rehearsal studio and later onstage, and everyone in the room was in tears.

There is a difference between the younger performers around today who can't sing who we complain about, and people like Stritch. It's called heart, and it's not in evidence very much anymore. If you have heart, you don't need to have a great voice.

"Elaine Stritch: At Liberty" was one of the major highlights of that season. A shame the Tony Awards didn't allow her to finish the Tony speech she's had for all these years...
The DVD of the show is available. What was shown on HBO was a documentary about the show, in addition to other aspects of her life.
