hey..don't know if any of you out there know anyone involved in a production of "kiss of the spiderwoman" at pace university in new york...it's the one where they've changed the spiderwoman character to be played by a man..without the approval of samuel french or kander and ebb.
Hey there, I'm not involved with the production really (being two or three times removed) but I was well aware of this production happening and I even saw it Saturday night. For the record: the show was licensed and there was nothing illegal...for that matter, how'd the rumor of a male spiderwoman get out? She was definitely female and she actually did a very good job.
My question is...is it illegal to cast a female roll as a male? What about narrators in like Into the Woods, Rocky Horror or Seussical (the Cat) were created by men and are traditional done by men. However sometime a female will be cast in these parts in smaller productions. Is that wrong? is it illegal? And if not then why is it a crime to cast the spiderwomen as a spiderman? (Im not saying its a good idea, just curious)
the rumor that a man was playing the Spiderwoman was true...it was written by some snot nose jerk on talkinbroadway last friday who was an obnoxious shill...and it was suppose to be played by a man....till the dean (it was a student directed production) got a call from samuel french about their unapproved change.
however....according to people who attened the show on saturday....they made unauthorized changed in the script.....sam french had reps in the audienceand now pace will not receive any future shows from them.....they've just screwed themselves over royally. once other theater license companys learn what pace did...they'll be lucky to do children's shows.
this is where i would want to go to school and study theater.
I think it would be great casting to cast it as a Man. I mean come on how cool would that be? Let's hear it for blind casting! It would give it a whole new demention.
JaiMonster, The Rocky Horror Narrator has been a woman in the past, on broadway, so that is not a problem. Sally Jessie Raphael was one of them. -Christina
ANY changes even small ones, should be appoved by the company/agent liscensing the piece. You can not make ANY changes no matter how small without permission. Changing the sex of a lead is a MAJOR change. It alters the very meaning of the piece.
since that kinda change would effectively make it "kiss of the spiderman" has anyone thought about how that would impact on the soon to be out "spiderman 2" and young toby mcguire?

i cant even believe this. im a senior in high school and as of right now i am going to pace next year to study theatre, glad to hear of all of this now. do you really think that they wont be able to get royalties? im hyperventalating...
I love non-traditional casting! But, it does tick off some writers/estates. A famous example is Edward Albee will close any production that attempts to cast ...Virginia Woolf with all men. He has said that if he wanted to write a play on the gay experience--he would.
But, when it is ok with the writer/estate, I say go for it! I am aching to play Evita!! =)
