I'm going to NYC in May. Seeing Hamlet and ITW. I've only been once before and stayed with a friend, but this time I'll be staying at a hotel. Google has been surprisingly unhelpful so I was wondering if any non-New Yorkers had any favorite places to stay that are close to Broadway.
I usually stay a little south of the Theatre District proper - either at the AC Hotel on 40th & 8th Av, or the Renaissance on 35th. I quite like the Renaissance, actually - keeps me out of the pedestrian traffic of the TS hotels.
Friends of mine just stayed at The St. James which is on 45th Street almost to 6th Avenue. The room was not huge but it was clean, and the hotel was old but nice. The rate was pretty good. I'd never heard of it so it's new to me. Someone mentioned the AC Hotel on 40th & 8th. Great location, nice rooms but the elevators take forever. If you are staying there leave a lot of extra time for the elevator rides.
My cousin always stays at the Bryant Park Hotel and will only stay there as they love the close proximity to the theatre district and find it quieter. We also had friends stay recently at the Intercontinental Time Square right in the district included breakfast along with great rates-IHG only around $200.

I like The Wellington because it is also close to Lincoln Center, Central Park and 5th Avenue. It is also close to Carnegie Hall, MOMA and City Center.
I had a nice stay at the Civilian recently. Tiny, tiny rooms, but well designed and cozy, and the price was right. Plus, it was designed by David Rockwell and themed to the theatre, so there were a lot of fun little details and easter eggs.
I like the Washington Jefferson. It's close to the Gershwin Theatre (Wicked).
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
Had a great stay at Hotel Shocard. It's right by the times square subway which I loved and next to the Nederlander. It's also a relatively cheap 4 star hotel

Bryant Park Hotel is great, and definitely a quieter vibe while still being really close to theaters. I also like the Hyatt Centric on 45th and 6th, with the killer rooftop bar.
