I'm auditioning for RENT soon & at a loss for what song to use because I also want to not use songs others might use. I had one originally but couldn't find sheet music so back to square one. RENT is my absolute most favorite show so Im trying to have this be perfect because it'd be a dream come true to play Maureen! I'm open to any suggestions & I'm an alto with pretty decent soprano range. Thank you so much!!!

You know the part and the show so well just sing from the show. Everyone is asked to sing from the show at the callback anyway so just get the role at the first audition. How does it possibly makes sense to do it any other way?

^Often companies ask you NOT to sing from the show, so they don't have to listen to the same 4 or 5 songs over and over again.   The goal is OFTEN to choose a song that also isn't overdone so that you stand out. The op is thinking correctly.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Well... with a caveat. We don't know if this is a pro audition or a community-level show. At a community level, they may very well ask to hear something from the show. If the audition notice says to do that, then do that.

If, on the other hand, it's a more professional situation where they want to hear your voice and your range but not necessarily something from the show, Idina Menzel auditioned with "When a Man Loves a Woman." (Think The Rose, not Percy Sledge.) That's as good a precedent as any.

Unless they specify that they don’t want to hear material from the show, always choose to do material from the show. The people behind the table don’t get tired of hearing the same songs over and over. On the contrary, getting to see different actors making different choices with the same material is a better, more efficient way to determine who is the best fit for the part. So, while it may be the same cut of the same song over and over, it’s a totally different performance each time. There’s nothing more frustrating than calling someone back because they’ve performed a song from another show which shows themself off the best only to discover that they either can’t sing the material from the show well or that they can’t deliver on the acting.
