This New York Times article (gift link) provides a lot of additional context, including that the LAPD say that without a complaint an arrest was/is not possible because of the crime being a misdemeanor.
"Both on Sunday night and in subsequent interviews this week, the Los Angeles police have maintained that Mr. Smith’s slap qualified as misdemeanor battery under California law — and that as a misdemeanor, officers cannot take action unless the victim in the case files charges, which Mr. Rock did not do."
"Running away- we'll do it. Why sit around, resigned? Trouble is, son, The farther you run, The more you feel undefined For what you have left undone And more, what you've left behind."
I think we are all disappointed by YKW on some level, but this is precisely why the "OMG! I'm Traumatized! discourse around it was so frustrating. Dozens of people see worse acts of violence every day, and that doesn't cause them to disrespect legends like Liza. Please stop using a rich guy acting like someone 1/6th of his age as an excuse for failing in other areas...
P.S - Gaga's support of Liza was probably the ONLY good thing at the ceremony outside the Best Original Song performances and the wins for West Side Story, Encanto and CODA. So why didn't the Academy allow Liza to make it even better?
