I created a petition to ask the Governor of NJ to keep schools closed and allow us to go remote in September. I have collected around 2700 signatures as of 9:00 this Saturday night. The more signatures we get, the better. I'm not looking for a debate on this topic. If you're not interested in signing, just ignore this. If, however, you feel it is unsafe to open schools in September, please sign and share.

Signed.

My father was an New Jersey public school teacher for 40 years. Thankfully, he is retired, because he's also someone with a chronic medical condition that puts him at increased risk for COVID. If he was still working and forced back into the classroom when it's still unsafe, it could cost him his life. No teacher should have to risk their life by going to work.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

" No teacher should have to risk their life by going to work. "

Doctors, Nurses, Policeman, Fireman, grocery store workers and many others risk their lives every day, why is that ok?

Sorry, I don't feed trolls.

WILL  SIGN

This is one petition with one specific purpose.  No one has said it's "OK" for others to risk their lives.  Move on.

My late father was a Florida public school teacher, also for 40 years.  Thank goodness, he retired when he did.  I agree, "that no teacher should have to risk their life by going to work".  And that was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy before coronavirus.

The School Districts in Los Angeles and San Diego (my home) announced today that schools in August will open for on-line classes only.  I believe they will reassess the decision in mid-August and will open physical classrooms only when (if) it is safe to do so.   There are some 700,000 students in the two Districts combined.

GOOD decision.

Just a general note: your signature isn't helpful if you aren't a Jersey resident.

As a teacher, I am incredibly torn by this.  I'm even on our re-opening committee. We've decided - but no idea if we'll be listened to - that it is NOT feasible to have all students in the building at once.  (Not even mentioning whether it's SAFE).

My teen son and I have begun to talk about things like: my will and making sure he's aware of all my bank accounts and information, as well as my choices about life support.   I shouldn't have to have that conversation with my 19 year old.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The rest of this situation with schools sucks and is a mess but I disagree that you shouldn't be having that conversation, any of us can go at any time due to numerous different circumstances. I signed my own DNR at your son's age because I have no desire to ever be kept on life support for years and years if I have no realistic chance of bouncing back.

You're setting him up to make things easier on him instead of him trying to scramble and figure out all that stuff on his own during what would be one of the worst moments of his life or make him choose what to do about life support because you never had put your wishes in writing.

I think it's important that every parent does this for their kids, even more so if you're a single or separated parent who doesn't have a spouse or someone else in charge of their stuff. People get into bad car accidents every day, people slip and fall on stairs and never recover, some go to bed and simply don't wake up. There is nothing wrong with preparing for the worst, it's why life insurance and any other type of insurance exist to begin with.
