Wow! He must be very versatile! Such diversity in his work - from Corny Collins to Henry Higgins! Good for him!

Can not forget his fantastic work in the Broadway revivals of ANNIE in 2012 (as Rooster Hannigan) and THE FRONT PAGE in 2016 (as Kruger).

I got to know Clarke a little in the early 2000s. Swell guy. I mentioned Clarke to Sondheim as a mutual acquaintance on one of the two occasions I shared a few brief words with him. Clarke had recently been in the NYTW workshop of Sondheim's Wise Guys (later called Gold!, then Bounce, then Road Show). When I mentioned Clarke, Sondheim mumbled something to the effect of, "Oh yes, Clarke Thorell, very good actor, very good actor." He wasn't verbose, but I remember thinking that if I were Clarke, I'd be thrilled that Sondheim (a) knew me and (b) approved of my work.

Clarke is pretty versatile. He does a fair amount of voiceover work, including animated stuff — at least that was true back then. Before I ever met him, my brother and I took a road trip to Chicago, to see the city for the first time. Having heard of the Goodman Theater for years, I talked my brother into joining me for their production of Floyd Collins. Clarke played Homer, Floyd's brother, and he was flat-out fantastic. Homer has some of the most captivating music in the score, and Clarke's 'Daybreak' was transcendent. That gorgeous harmony with Floyd on the passage beginning with 'when Mama was alive' has never sounded better. Man, wish I had a recording of that.

Anyway, our paths haven't crossed in years, but I've always wished Clarke well and still smile whenever I see he's booked a new show. I bet his Higgins is very good indeed.
