Dolly Parton’s: Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol

I attended the world premiere last night of Dolly Parton’s new musical version of A Christmas Carol. I went in with low expectations because this was a staged reading of the musical... minimal costumes/props, no sets, etc. To say that the show is bad is a mild understatement... it clocked in at just under 3 hours!!! Dolly’s score was solid, but far from great... but what is a simple and classic story that the audience knows well becomes an over complicated, emotionally manipulative mess. The songs don’t match the characters thoughts/feelings, and bogs down the show every time someone begins singing, and I ultimately came away wondering what I just saw, and more importantly why the need for this... it was cool to have Dolly there... She sang a bit of “9 to 5” and talked briefly to the audience before the show started, then took her place in the audience, then after the show finished she came back onstage thanked the audience and sang a quick song with the cast.
