I'm late to the party with this, but KB's performance of Sex is in the Heel at the Oliviers last year just popped up on my YouTube suggestions. There were eight Angels in the number. Is that always the case, or were two added just for the award show? Are there normally six as originally staged on Broadway?
Good catch, you're correct. There are 8 on the Oliviers telecast, there's usually only 6 in the original staging. You can look at videos of the original staging on YouTube :).
The 8 Angels look amazing in the number, I wish that was the real staging but that would make the cast count too high/too crowded on the real stage.
Yes, there's usually only 6 angels like the other productions but they used 2 of the swings as angels to make the performance more extravagant, the other 2 male swings can be seen as factory workers in the background. The 2 swing angels are the 2 at the back of the 'line-up' if you go to 1.20 in the video :) Callum Francis and Rob Jones, Callum is now Lola in the Australian production.
Check out the West End Live performance -they used 10 angels. Seeing as the stage was smaller than that of a theatre, it was quite busy with our favourite drag queens :)
Thanks for letting me know! Great staging with 4 extra Angels. Per the YouTube comments, they used an assistant choreographer as well. Amazing! I so love the energy of this show.
