Anyone in the St. Louis area get a chance to see this? Debating about buying tickets / waiting in the free seats. Is it better then the Broadway production which I remember seeing and that was horrendous.
I've been going to Muny shows for 10 years now, and I would say that in the past two years since the new Executive Producer took over, the quality of productions is a vast improvement over the previous years. The general air of the Muny before was of sloppy technical productions with rented costumes and sometimes good performances. I saw some good shows, but not in comparison to the past two years, in which the quality has steadily improved. It's still a mixed bag to a degree, because there are are still shows that aren't that great (like last year's SHREK). Still, the best three shows I've seen at the Muny were all last year. This year's BILLY ELLIOT was very good as well.
As for TARZAN, I didn't see the Broadway show so I can't compare. I will say that I heard bad things about it, and I wasn't expecting to enjoy this production at the Muny. I was surprised, though, in that for the most part, I liked it. The show itself has its issues, but I thought this was a good production of it. The local reviews have been generally positive, as well. Here's my review:
