BOM will refuse to let you sit until Act 2. There were two seats directly in front of us in the last row, and the usher yelled at us when we tried to move 20 minutes into the show.
Unfortunately, it's common for people to arrive late. So you're best bet is wait and switch at Intermission. I've done that at Kinky Boots, Matilda, and Once.
It's been a while, but when two couples stormed out of BOM after Hasa Diga, the usher let me and someone else from standing room go up and use them immediately after the next song.
Most places won't even sell SRO unless they are sold out...some waiting until the very last ticket is gone. Others will sell when nearly all are gone.
Good luck.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I thought the OP was asking if they got standing room and there was a random empty seat available could they use it... otherwise, dramamama is right. If the show isn't sold out, there is no SRO.
You are likely correct, but it would be rare that the few patrons that were no shows were also in the back -- just trying to cover all bases!
