I am a regular on the west end board and with the announcement of the tony award nomination (don't worry, me and my friends in the UK are as weirded out as you guys are) But it is time for me to buy my annual tony awards Broadway Cast recording. I will be buying Aladdin and The Bridges of Madison County and want to order 1 more. It is between Rocky and If/Then ( I will be ordering A Gentleman's guide to love and marriage from the UK) can anyone help me out on which I should buy..Rocky or If/Then
Musical-Matt: several songs from If/Then are available on YouTube, and at least one song on the official website. Rocky has five songs posted on Facebook/ Soundcloud. I'd just suggest you listen and be able to pick which you like best.
As neither ROCKY or IF/THEN have had their recordings released I can't speak to the quality of the recordings, but as far as the scores themselves worked in the theatre neither was pretty revelatory and/or worth purchasing from my perspective. If I had to pick one of yours there were more highlights musically in ROCKY than there were in IF/THEN for me, but each had a lot of filler that I'd skip on any listen.
ETA: I had mistakenly thought the OP wasn't planning on purchasing GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE, which I mentioned in this post as being more worthy than either of these two.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
The music on the Rocky soundcloud IS from the cast recording, and it sounds pretty great to me. But you're right, If/Then is not available for it to be compared.
jnb9872- the OP is purchasing "Gent's Guide" already... and I have to mention that I also love that score!
Ah whoops! I missed that parenthetical! (Ironic, as I do love parentheticals myself.)
