It wasn't Broadway, but I'm rather certain that the artwork for the tour of THE ADDAMS FAMILY used the original Broadway artwork with Morticia and Gomez changed to Douglas Sills and Sara Gettlefinger. The rest of the principals on the ads were from the OBC, who weren't in the tour.

Ute Lemper has been laying on the marquee of Chicago since at least 2008, she was last in the show in 1998

come to think of it, most of Chicago's advertising uses photos of former cast members, unless a celebrity is in the show that week.

I think back to when Priscilla had Bette Midler on the billboards [yes I know she was producer] but some people thought she was in the show because of her photo placement.

New shows (Ghost, A Christmas Story) do this when they want to create a brand they can sell around the world, and have artwork that's not tied to a specific production...so they don't have to keep paying for photo shoots.

I believe Equity's standard media fee was accompanied by looser rules about using the images of performers who have left the show without additional payments, but I'm not positive.

Not debating the wisdom of it, but that's your answer.

The TV commercials now airing are Drew Sarich and the German production, and there are some other print advertisements from the German production used in the States, but the one picture of Rocky with Adriane looking a bit forlorn that appears on this sight often and is used regularly around the city is not Drew Sarich.

The logo for the 2000 revival of The Music Man at the Neil Simon Theater featured a non-cast member playing the trombone.

One imagines the promotion of a musical starts well before there is a cast ready to be photographed in character/scene/sets. So, there is that part of the equation to factor in, as well. Sort of how NPH's Hedwig promotional picture was intentionally vague, since they are using him to sell the show, but he had yet to start rehearsals or know what his take on Hedwig would be, so there'll probably be no scene in the whole show where he looks like that picture.

Now t/d/b/a haterobics on here.
