"Anyway, I still would like to know WHY the industry is "rah-rah"-ing around a perfectly pleasant country singer who attempted to do a TV musical, but still lacked the chops to DO the role, and why anyone who's in touch with the reality of her performance is being told that they're mean, or in Ms. Underwood's case, need Jesus? I mean, honestly, does she have dirty pictures of someone?"

She is a cash cow for anyone who touches her. She has no negative baggage and a reputation for being a very nice and kind person. People want to see her do good. But jv92, I pretty much agree with everything you are saying.

Technically, wouldn't hate mail have to be a physical object hand delivered?

Sounds to me like she read some negative pixels, which is an entirely different thing.

"...And if making a joke about someone's acting-- which is not the same as Megan Kelly making jokes about race on a "news" program..."

Just to clarify, JV, I'm not comparing jokes about acting with Megan's racist comments. What I was saying is that Megan's next-day excuse for those comments was to claim that they were just tongue-in-cheek jokes for kids. I'm comparing her lame excuse saying "racism wasn't really racism; it was a joke" with saying that "hate mail wasn't really hate mail, it was just bitchy show queens."

Hate is hat. It shouldn't be excused just because it's in the form of witty shade from "bitchy queens"

I propose we stop saying bitchy queens and just say faggots. There's less typing involved and a slur is a slur.

Also, I love how this board has moved beyond any rational discussion of her performance and have just moved on to an indictment of the people who "hate" Carrie and wish death upon her, even though none of the faggots here have been that faggoty.

I actually knew somebody in high school who referred to the doing of gay or gay-ish things over all as "faggotry." As in "Okay, enough faggotry, who wants to play Call of Duty?"

Faggotry perfectly describes they that would dare to be anything but boundlessly grateful for the gift bestowed upon us by the benevolent Carrie Underwood.

As in "Enough faggotry, let's put on a better Broadway musical?"

They really do need a sarcasm font.

I watched the first half again last night and--with my expectations lowered--I couldn't help noticing that while no actress, Carrie Underwood sang the role as well as or better than any of the many Marias I have heard.

That said, I also found it hard to believe anybody really helped her with her acting. High school productions offer more believable performances.

"She received no death threats".
Then I can only assume my missive was lost or misdelivered by the post office.

But seriously, I thought Underwood sang beautifully, and I wasn't tuning in to see her incredible acting. It's not O'Neil, Ibsen, or Chekhov. It's the role of Maria in THE SOUND OF MUSIC played by a country singer who won a reality TV popularity contest. Did anyone really think she was suddenly going to be a young Kim Stanley?

For next year, I hope NBC chooses KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. It never truly feels like Thanksgiving or Christmas for my family without a little sodomy or Marxism.

My choice is Zac Efron for Valentin and Justin Bieber for Molina. They may be a little young yet for the parts, but once they take their shirts off no one will care.

"Did anyone really think she was suddenly going to be a young Kim Stanley?"

I expected her to be Judi effin' Dench. She won that contest a million years ago, and I realize that Uta Hagen has passed to that great theater in the sky, but still Carrie should have realized that she, as Sondheim said, "should have gone to an acting school that seems clear." If she's waiting for Jesus to tap her on the shoulder and say "Goest thou to an acting school" she's in for a long wait.

I thought the only real worthwhile part of the broadcast was Audra's "Climb Ev'ry Mountain." It actually gave me chills. I'm usually not a huge fan of this song, but I thought she did a phenomenal job singing and acting it. And it is by far Carrie Underwood's best moment in the show, mainly because she doesn't speak and just reacts to Audra's singing.

A friend of mine mentioned that the subtext he felt from it was that the Reverend Mother missed a love opportunity for herself and the near tears seem for her own loss, and wishing Maria does not make a similar mistake.

For anyone who wants to see it again, here's a link.

Gothampc, Underwood won American Idol in 2005. Since 8 years is a million to you - that tap on the shoulder from Jesus would inversely take about five minutes.

"Gothampc, Underwood won American Idol in 2005."

And in 2006, her management team should have said "Let's think about getting you an acting coach. You don't get an EGOT by sitting around."

"Justin Bieber for Molina. They may be a little young yet for the parts, but once they take their shirts off no one will care."

Is that a joke? Not everyone likes scrawny boys who look like women. Justin Beiber is universally hated by most people because he acts like a spoiled, entitled teenager. He pissed in a mop bucket and expected the janitorial staff to clean it up. He isn't an actor, he can't sing, and he's obnoxious. Terrible idea!

Yes, that was a joke Sutton Ross. If the - it's not Christmas without a little sodomy and Marxism - line wasn't a clue or the fact that KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN is anything but family fare, then I don't know what to tell you.

And the fact that both Efron and Bieber are wrong for the parts is exactly the point - just as many felt Underwood was not right for the part. NBC was going for "a name" that would draw their desired demographic instead of casting someone who could do the role justice.
