At first glance, I thought April Fools Day came two months and sixteen days late.

Not a fan of NPH, more due to his ego than his genuine talent, but adore Hedwig. What a conundrum. Will see how the early word is when it hits the stage next year before deciding whether to go.

Also, Graily, the number one cray-cray on this thread is straight up legit cray-cray as anybody who has been reading his stupidity since he joined thoroughly knows. It's funny to me because I think he's an idiot, state that fact in threads as plainly as I can and then he PMs me (which I delete without reading). But in this thread, he proposes we "team up." He is the third demonstrably crazy poster I have called out on these boards who has made a similar proposal to me. Like I'm joking and we should be a comedy duo.

And yes, I can't believe people who have actually seen Harris perform live could ever come away thinking he can't tackle something and do a good job of it. And so, yes, I think they are gebronis and I will continue to say so. It's not like he's some stupid TV contest winner or something, he's a guy who has earned his stripes.

I'm willing to be open-minded and give him a fair shot. It's a bit early to start crucifying the man. This just means the Spring 2014 season on Broadway got a little more interesting. And that's never a bad thing.

My beloved Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI just published the Harris/Hedwig announcemet in Variety under the heading, "Yes! This is some good Monday theatre news."

And THAT is why I am a proud Trinity subscriber (they're doing terrific productions of Ayckbourn's "House" and "Garden" right now) and why I think some of you are real gibronii.

Jane, I saw Cerveris as Hedwig at the Henry Fonda in L.A. I had no idea who he was at the time, but he was excellent and so memorable in the part, I agree.

On a side note, a dear friend of mine (theatre buddy from college, and we're still close) played Yitzhak for over a year in San Francisco with John Cameron Mitchell. I was so in awe of her when she told me. I think I bowed out of spontaneous respect.

Besty, along those lines - the show was in danger of closing (more danger than usual) after Ally Sheedy. At that time, Matt McGrath was understudying Michael in LA. However, Matt had not actually gone on for him yet. He came back to NY and went on as Hedwig, got raves from Brantley, and saved the show for another three months.

I love Matt.

Saw NPH as Tobias in Sweeney in LA 10+ years ago. He was the highlight while we cringed as Kelsey Grammar couldn't sing the lead.

Saw a great, intimate Hedwig in San Francisco a few years back. Always loved the movie / track.

Yeah, NPH can do this. For those who think he won't be able to play the twink who lured Luther, don't forget that that's done as flashback in the stage play. It's OK if modern-day Hedwig looks mannish... that's half the appeal.

This was supposed to happen a few years ago. Riedel wrote about it, but his article mentions that Mitchell was going to do the part. He was inaccurate, it was always going to star NPH. But then Neil decided to have a family and concentrate on that and HIMYM, so the plans were scrapped.

As for David Burtka, he is super talented and perhaps he'll also do a show in NY. Maybe even HEDWIG.

Listening to this score for the first time right now... I can absolutely hear him singing this. Not a great score, but I'm excited to see NPH on stage for the first time.

For those of you are pitching a fit because you don't like him - whatever. Sucks for you, honestly. Just means you won't get to enjoy a production. Kudos on having better taste than us, though

For my 2 cents, I think this is a bad choice on many levels. Love the show, but it doesn't belong in a big house with a lead that bland.

My two cents,not that it's even worth that, NPH is an interesting choice. I hope he is right vocally, and I look forward to hearing him. The only thing I would be concerned about is the show working in a big space. It will have to be quite the rewrite to work on a Broadway house. If it doesn't work, my guess is that it will be because the show gets swallowed by a large theatre, and not because of the talent employed.

I was going to comment on the cray-cray as well, but decided it really isn't worth it. Too many people don't understand why the crazy is being called out despite adequate responses from many others.

He'll be great. He's a pro, he has the skill set, he's fearless and he has the presence the role demands. And David will turn up in something - he's very well-respected in the community - but it won't be while Neil is working because of the kids.

I actually heard the word as "jerblony" or "gerblony" years ago. But then Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson codified it as "gerbrony." As in, "It doesn't MATTER what you think! Gerbrony!"

I've only seen David twice, in "The Play About the Baby" and "Gypsy" with Peters and he was wonderful in both. Triple threat (back then anyway). And while most parents do have to work, if you were in a position where you didn't have to and could spend more time with your kids...? Just saying.

My point was that the conversation was leading to the fact that because NPH was working on a show, that David could not. I thought it funny that's they way we think of "show people", specifically that posters thought of this particular family. Rich/famous partners with children work all the time. Perhaps Neil and David have a pact that only one works at a time,and that's in the press. And these posters were commenting on the possible breach of their arrangement. I don't know. Don't care. I wasn't making any judgment call. Just a comment, and furthering the conversation. Good night. Chat tomorrow.
