"Last night towards the end of the Tony Awards just after 11:00 p.m., WGCL encountered a few seconds of black and our local producers accepted that trigger as the end of the network broadcast and began our 11 p.m. newscast. The network feed of the Tony Awards was not over and WGCL did not air the final seven minutes of the broadcast. This was a human error and action is being taken to guarantee this does not happen again. We apologize to our viewers who were watching the broadcast. CBS Atlanta News is a passionate supporter of the arts; this error in no way reflects the opinion of WGCL-TV, CBS Atlanta News or its employees. We will be airing the final segment of the Tony Awards at the start of all newscasts at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. today."
Seems like a little overkill, but a very nice statement and gesture.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
That's not going to help their newsreader's flailing at announcing the winners and butchering the names of the plays. And it's going to be odd for someone turning into the news at 4:00 and seeing 7 minutes of the Tony broadcast, which I think starts in the middle of Once.
I had added 10 minutes on to my DVR recording knowing it would go over. Even though friends told me the ending was cut, it was still a little disappointing. I can imagine the frustration of being in the moment, glued to the TV, and all of a sudden, "Hey Georgia! It's raining! Oh, and Kenny Boots won. Good for him."
They had to apologize for this huge error after receiving over 400 facebook complaint posts and multiple email and twitter complaints. Apparently CBS Atlanta stopped answering the phone last night due to all the complaints. I don't think the backlash would have been as bad if their initial attempt to rectify the situation wasn't the pitiful announcement of the winners below by the news anchor. If you haven't seen it, watch it for a good laugh.
Be nice, y'all. It was a stressful night for the news. They had to tell the good people of Atlanta and surrounding areas that it was raining and had been raining and may rain for a bit. That's demanding. You try doing that.
Yeah, I was watching the Tonys in ATL when at 11, BOOM! it goes into their 11pm newscast, when in my less than 1 year in the city, I understand is a bit of a joke. Well, the entire station really. I have 2 friends that used to work there and I work in the local TV so I hear things. Apparently, they cut off the end of the March Madness basketball finals a few years ago as well.
To be honest, I don't believe their explanation. I think they did it to try to keep people from flipping over to other newscasts and are using the "seconds of black" as an excuse to keep from getting in trouble with CBS network because they messed up BIG TIME! I hate they blamed a lower level employee rather than the person who probably did it. They are trying to save face.
I know it's not the biggest deal in the world that they didn't air the end, but it's just frustrating and embarrassing that they did it. I did watch the 5pm news this evening and they read the statement and aired the end of the Tonys, from Once all the way to the Audra mic drop.
