Love all the ones mentioned, especially Kiss Me, Kate (I prefer the revival myself), Carousel, and 1776.

I would also add Last Five Years, since it is gorgeous music and you get practically the whole story by listening to it.

I'd like to add PHANTOM to my list. Like Wynbish said with LAST FIVE YEARS, you kind follow the story of PHANTOM by listening to it.

I'll just add in one of my all time if not my favorite Original Broadway Cast Album...EVER:

PROMISES, PROMISES - ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST and ORIGINAL LONDON CAST Recordings

If you can get your hands on the Kritzerland re-masters, you are good to go with this one.

Me too Wynnie. I didn't list it because I was trying to keep my list manageable. But yea, definitely Last 5 Years and also Parade (JRB's - not Jerry Herman's)

No one mentioned Phantom? Wow, good catch.

I'd throw in at least one Forbidden Broadway, because they are pretty fun

But the BURNING question is: Which recording of LES MIZ to include? Your favourite musical theatre albums?

@Wyni: Yes! The FORBIDDEN BROADWAY series is always a fun listen.

I vote 10th Anniversary. It's not as complete, but it really was a dream cast with great performances

Onelovelysky,

Perhaps you have the essentials already.

Since you asked what our own favorites were, here are those I find myself playing again and again:

Pal Joey
The Boy Friend
The Girl in Pink Tights
Can-Can
Little Mary Sunshine
Milk and Honey
Tenderloin
Dear World
The Utter Glory of Morrissey Hall

She Loves Me is a fun score

Out of my own curiosity (sorry, OP), would anyone recommend a movie version of what has already been said or something that has not been said?

And that's what taz referenced, your "good catch"

I love the West Side Story and Sound of Music movie albums, even with the dubbing galore. I cannot stand Kathryn Grayson in Kiss Me, Kate

Yes GingerBread, the "good catch" was directed to you.

And just having read the Cabaret thread I have to add that the list.

I would suggest the Studio 54 recording only because it has the movie songs incorporated making it the most complete version.

I would argue, and have, that the OST of Little Shop is more worthy of essential preservation than the OOBC.

I'll take a different approach from others:

Cleo Laine Sings Sondheim

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Gershwin Songbook

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I agree with all the others but the list wouldn't be complete without:

Aida
Chicago
Jesus Christ Superstar
Jekyll and Hyde
Mame
Legally Blonde
42nd Street
Oliver
Company
Into the woods
Sunset Boulevard

Some essential motion picture soundtracks:
Hello Dolly
Cabaret
Funny Girl
Moullin Rouge
