Musical theatre took the lion’s share of the prizes at the Off West End Awards 2011, with seven awards going to musical productions.

Union Theatre’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s 'Assassins' picked up the awards for Best Production and Best Sound Design, while Alastair David was awarded the choreography prize for 'Bells Are Ringing' at the same venue.

Thom Southerland’s revival of 'Me And Juliet' at the Finborough saw him win the award for Best Director, while Howard Hudson won the lighting design award for both that production and 'Tomorrow Morning' at the Landor. Emily Stuart’s designs for Jermyn Street’s production of 'Anyone Can Whistle' won the award for Best Costume/Make-up Design.

The award for Best New Musical was awarded to Theatre503’s 'Porn -The Musical', with the judges praising its “fearless explosion of heart, sould and cleavage”.

Meanwhile, Michelle Terry won Best Female Performance for her role as Sylvia in 'Tribes' at the Royal Court, which also won Best New Play for author Nina Raine, while Danny Webb’s portrayal of Ian in 'Blasted' at the Lyric Hammersmith saw him take home the award for Best Male Performance.

Finborough Theatre’s Neil McPherson picked up the award for Best Artistic Director two months after the venue won the Stage 100 Award for Best Fringe Venue.

In total, seventeen awards were presented in the ceremony, held this afternoon at Wilton’s Musical Hall in east London.
Actor Simon Callow, who hosted the ceremony, said: “Off West End theatre should not be defined by its relationship to the West End. The crucial point is that this work we do is theatre for its own sake.”

Freakin' ecstatic for Michelle Terry. She was unforgettably brilliant, and had damn well better take the Olivier too.
