I have no idea why they are even performing this in Sydney. But it's mind-blowing. I'm shocked they are even here.
I suppose AUGUST is so 2-years ago for you guys though :P.
I'm guessing other plays aren't this funny/moving/heartbreaking?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Why are you shocked that they're performing it in Sydney?
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

I didn't see Deanna Dunagan (saw Estelle Parsons instead who was simply brilliant in every way), but I very much remember seeing AUGUST: OC for the first time with that amazing cast, especially Amy Morton who gave what I thought was an epic performance as Barbara. Glad you got to see it and enjoy it, it may have been a few years ago, but I've never forgotten the experience!
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
August: Osage County is the only evening of theater that I have ever had that was actually worth the $120 I paid for my ticket. I read the play and loved it. Then I saw it and loved it even more.
I wish I had seen Dunagan though. Amy Morton was incredible, and if Dunagan beat her to the Tony I can only imagine how good she was. I saw Estelle Parsons, who was very good, just not the way I had envisioned Violet when I read the play. She was a bit too cuddly I thought, although she absolutely broke my heart in the final moments of the show.
"And then you're gone. And then you're gone. And then you're gone. And then you're gone..."
I saw Dunagan and I saw the opening night of the tour here in Denver with Parsons. Both were very good but i think I enjoyed Dunagan more. As good as the touring cast was on opening night, I bet they were even better as the tour went on.
It is certainly up there among the great plays of all times.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Was Laurance Lau still with the show? I was surprised when he walked out on stage. I was in the first row(Too close) and just wanted to leap onstage and kidnap him. Had a major crush on him from All My Children. He did a good job in the play.
