Wicked Question

Just saw the show again and was thinking about the connection between the Wizard of Oz and the show and I thought of something...
In the movie, the Wizard sends Dorothy to bring him back the Witches broom, but in the melting scene in the show, she doesnt even have the broom. Is there a reason for this?

Remember that Gregory Maguire did not just use the movie, he combined elements from the original book as well as the MGM screenplay to create his version of Oz.

In the movie, yes, the Wizard does tell them to bring him the broom, to which one of them (I'm pretty sure the Scarecrow) replies "But to do that we'd have to kill her." The Wizard's response is "Bring me the broom," in which he's basically saying, "yes, that's right and that's really what I'm sending you to do."

Unfortunately the book didn't really transfer to the stage. They took Elphaba and Galinda's friendship and made it a show. I saw the original cast. I finished the book 8 days before I saw it and found myself filling in th "blanks" while I was watching the show. But the show is entertaining...no doubt.
