All this talk about the Hair replacement cast has made me wonder- do they audition nude? I know that seems silly, but what if you cast someone who would be distracting during the nude scene? You don't want a tribe member who 'steals focus' from the leads or someone who might inspire the audience to point and laugh. How do they check the actors have what it takes to handle the part?

I got to sit in on those auditions. It's a tough job, but someone had to do it.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Is it true- there are no small parts, only small actors?

I'm curious....
What would you consider distracting? Isn't the point of hair that this tribe is inclusive of everyone and free of the pressures of the world? Anyone should be able to be in the tribe no matter what their body type.

I did a production of Hair at the Hangar Theater a few years ago and we did not have to audition nude. It said in our contract that signing the contract meant that you agreed to appear naked...so then deciding not to do so (or being scared to do so) would have been a breech in contract. I do wonder if they had to audition naked...though it seems unnecessary to me.

Well I would assume that small parts would be exactly what the producers would want to avoid, Joe.

There are some scene stealing parts in the original cast.

The Bway cast isn't required to get naked! They didn't have to say whether they would or would not at auditions, and they didn't have to get naked at call backs. Also, if someone doesn't want to get naked on a certain night they can tell the SM and they can re-arrange the tableau where they're all standing together.

Don't they have to rehearse the entire show naked too? Someone told me that was a requirement for Gavin and the rest of the cast.

Yea, the nude scene, in most productions, has been if the actor chose to or not. If it's going to be in a contract, then it should be requested at auditions.

If you don't you are called a prude behind your back and usually drink alone at all cast functions. This applies to most productions of Hair.

In the original production they got an extra five bucks for every performance that they did the nude scene in. One of the original SMs told me that one of his jobs was standing in the wings each night with the cast list and "doing a private parts count."

I believe the casting notice said that there is nudity, but actors can opt out of it.

I should hope so. Is anyone really going to want to get naked the night that their mom is in the audience?

I say take your clothes off or get the hell off of Broadway! Plenty of less prudish actor would do more than just go nude for that paycheck.

You'd have to go off-Broadway to do more than that for pay.

I had a friend who had a callback for a Regional production of "Take Me Out" and he had to strip in the audition. Equity rules say a Stage Manager has to be present and it turned out the Stage Manager was someone he knew!

One of my teachers was in Naked Boys Singing and he said the entire final callback is done nude.

I was called back for Naked Boys Singing Off-Broadway. The dance call was to be done in the nude for non-Equity actors. Equity actors had the option whether to do it nude or not. Well, I can say I danced completely nude with other nude strangers on an Off-Broadway stage (the audition took place at New World Stages). Makes for a good story, no?

In the '06 St Pete standalone I've mentioned elsewhere here, nudity was optional; about 5 people in the tribe opted to wear a body stocking.

They did rehearse the act 1 finale *once* in the nude, as part of the tech/dress.

But, you don't want someone with parts too big. Boobs are fine, but if you have been putting silicon injections in your junk for 6 years, you probably will not get picked.

I saw a production of Hair where one actor absolutely stole focus. I tried to be all grown up and look away but frankly I only had eyes for him. As the lights came up, my theater companion (a heterosexual male) turned to me and said "Oh my God, did you see that last guy on the left!?"

i replied "How could I NOT?"
