Bringing a group of middle aged, never been to NYC, theatre lovers to town in March. I currently hold tickets for Billiy, Mamma Mia, and Shrek. What would be a good substitute for Shrek. My reasons for choosing these three are: one legit, one juke box, one fun.

Thoughts? Thanks.

The initial list had a "Legit" in it?

And I'm kind of insulted that you wouldn't consider either of the other shows "Legit."

Your group deserves to sit through VANITIES 3 times.

Just get tickets to Ragtime and call it a day.

Hair, In The Heights, or Ragtime. And dump Mamma Mia while you're at it.

If you're going to see a juke box, see Jersey Boys. Just throw on the Mamma Mia movie on the bus ride and everyone gets the same effect. Why not see a play?

Out of those, I would choose Billy Elliot but I would also recommend looking into Ragtime.

If you want fun, because that's what you said you were looking for, Rock of Ages is far from the best but A LOT of fun, so is In the Heights, i wish bye bye birdie could be in that list but im sure no one wants to get into that now haha

I would agree that Rock of Ages is probably a great substitute, especially for a middle-aged crowd. Plus it's 3 times as fun as Shrek!

Go see Hair. They can remember hippies, see a great show, and dance on the stage at the finale.

What is your definition of traditional?

I define "traditional" in terms of the older classics, such as West Side Story and South Pacific. In that case, I wouldn't call Billy Elliot traditional. Nor anything else on your list.

But if you define a "traditional" show as one that incorporates singing and dancing, then they are all traditional.

I think you mean you are looking for a classic, fun show and juke-box musical. And there is a lot of overlapping that can go on among the three.

To replace Shrek, go see Wicked, The Lion King or Mary Poppins since you are taking middle-aged people who have never been to NYC. Those fall under "fun," in my opinion. Hair was also fun for me, but it depends how much they would like the audience interaction.

Well, I saw VANITIES four times, and loved it.

I think Mary Poppins is a great 'fun' show.

1. I totally got what you meant by "legit" and your reasonings for it.

2. The op listed the shows that his/her group already purchased...not show to choose between.

Depending on the group, and keeping with you "fun" show. Rock of Ages certainly fits the bill. If you want to go for a connection for the group sentimentality-wise -- What age is "middle age"? Are they 40's? -- Rock of Ages Are they older? Hair

PERSONALLY....My two favorite musicals are Hair and Next to Normal. Next to Normal could expose them to a different type of musical as well: serious, contemporary, small/intimate, intense.
