Most of the episodes, even those before the break, were theme episodes; now they just happen to have the support of a major artist like Madonna willing to lend her music to a theme episode. And they hardly needed the participation of Olivia Newton-John to boost ratings... it's already the highest rated scripted show on television. Its target demo doesn't care that Olivia guest-starred tonight or even that Madonna lent her catalog to the show. It's going to be watched either way, big-names or not.

I started watching again because I'm a Groff fan...but his role has been so incredibly boring that it's not worth it. What actually HAPPENED in this episode?

Nothing.

I can't believe that I missed the memo about Groff coming out.

Blah Blah for Gaga ! Aside from an inspiring turn by Idina singing FUNNY GIRL and a final duet with Michele ( Pokerface redux) the episode was uninspired. The Gaga and KISS numbers fell flat and the gay bashing and and being out & proud is getting tiresome as well. Seems producer Ryan Murphy likes to harp on that theme a lot.

Did Jane Lynch call in sick for this episode?

That was truly horrific. From the complete and utter absence of Sue and of Brittany laugh lines to the misbegotten "theatricality" theme to the unintentionally hilarious Burt/Finn scene to the aborted and random Shelby plotline to the random-ass pyrotechnics that budget-strapped McKinley High could seemingly afford to the Quinn/Puck D-story to that "Poker Face" duet I can barely talk about for fear of reliving it, Glee now seems intent on making me not like it.

It's like an abusive relationship. Glee pulls crap like this all the time, but every once in a while there's a glimmer of hope that it still loves me, and that's why I stay.

Dear Glee,
I have SO many reasons to love you. Why are you trying so hard to make me hate you? Is it something I said?

Agree with so many posters here. I am now at the point where I just channel surf by this show to see if, by some miracle, there is something worth watching. But those times are getting fewer with each episode. From soap-opera plot lines to the uninspired musical numbers, this show is dying a slow painful death.
I can't believe it's already been renewed for a 3rd season, and the first season isn't even over yet. My guess is that by the middle of season 2, sometime next year, they will be SO out of ideas for this mess, Fox will be reconsidering that decision.

Yes, that "POKER FACE" duet was just a very poor choice of song for that Mother/Daughter moment.... And what was the point of IDINA's character finding her daughter, only to leave...not logical..as I said before, this show is poorly written, sometimes badly acted...Yet I continue to watch, hoping it gets better...and for SUE, the only real reason to watch...

As I said in the OT thread, the writing is becoming like a soap opera. We see Kurt's father invite Finn and his mother to live with them. Obviously Finn is not happy about the idea. Finn rebels by using derogatory language and less than a week later Kurt's father is telling Finn to get out. Cue tears from Kurt, cue impassioned speech by Kurt's father. Only in soap operas do you get such bizarre plot lines and that's because they have to churn the scripts out as quickly as possible. Murphy should have taken the time to think through the character arcs more carefully. Murphy needs to drop the preachy agenda and just let the characters develop.

"to the random-ass pyrotechnics that budget-strapped McKinley High could seemingly afford "

i was thinking the same when i saw that. we were saying "okay, cut the pyro already"

I don't really watch Glee for the plot. I'm sure quite a few people don't. But the plot had Idina Menzel singing 'Funny Girl'. For me, that made up for any and all plot failings.
(I realize that mentioning Idina Menzel on this board usually leads to many negative comments, but Funny Girl and I Dreamed a Dream were sublime.)

it's already the highest rated scripted show on television.

I do not think so. I think it might be the highest rated NEW scripted series.

I was reminded how much I dislike the song "Funny Girl" in the movie. If they use this episode as an excuse to cast Idina as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl at Encores, I will be really sad. Also, as good as Poker Face sounded, it just made NO sense. Like, I am confused how anyone could think that was a good mother/daughter duet. It was like Rachel was said "Well my assignment for the week is Lady Gaga, so I HAVE to sing a Gaga song with you."

P.S. They only did 2 Gaga songs, so it was hardly a "Glee Goes Gaga" episode.

The Kurt/Finn storyline is starting to get on my nerves a bit. I know the show takes things out of the range of reality but is Kurt really that blindly in love that he didn't realize his new decor was not something Finn would be into? I just kind of rolled my eyes when he was describing the things in the room. if he loves Finn so much, it seems he would pay more attention to what he likes. I expected a football themed room to please Finn. I don't know.

Idina's "Funny Girl" was absolutely wonderful and I hope she does it in her concerts with the symphony orchestras. I am not a "rabid" fan of hers, I even turned down tickets for her last tour when it was here, but I plan to see her in September when she performs with the Colorado Symphony.

Kurt was just being self centered.

Okay maybe I am just not as bitter as all of you..but I had tears in my eyes during the Kurt's Father and Finn moment... Also, the pyro was just smoke machines with lights. At one point one of them was standing in it.

Oh, the father's speech was excellent.

Kurt was being self centered but doesn't he realize by now that Finn is straight? It went through my mind that they may be setting it up for Kurt to do something drastic in the season finale.

Really? I was actually offended by Kurt's father's speech. The way they dramatized it actually made it hard to take seriously. They totally undermined that it is an ACTUAL issue. They shouldn't have made that speech at Finn, someone who actually doesn't HATE Kurt (or gay people in general). Being uncomfortable and being hateful are different things. They should have saved that speech for someone who actually had an anti-gay agenda. I was infuriated that they didn't take it seriously.

bjh, I agree with you about who it was directed to. I was commenting on the speech itself. It was unfair that it was directed at Finn. That's why it ran through my mind that something will happen with Kurt in the finale because he will feel guilty.

Definitely possible, uncageg. Though that might be just as annoying, lol. My response was directed more towards EvanK. He had tears in his eyes while mine were probably bloodshot with anger. The speech itself was fine, but the setup was awful. How upsetting.

I am not a big Gaga fan but I enjoyed "Poker Face". That version is the only song/version I can even stand to listen to by her since they play her everywhere. I thought they were going to hit us with a ton of her songs so I was pleasantly surprised when they didn't. I do have to say I got a chuckle out of the red outfits and how they knew VA was going Gaga by what they bought for costumes.

Ever see Nip/Tuck? Ryan Murphy's shows are ALL darkly-comic over the top parodies of soapiness that sort of descend into that which they imitate once in a while.

Nip/Tuck was fairly revolutionary in style. It and Six Feet Under were the only pitch-black comedy/drama soap parody when they began. Unfortunately, soon after, that style took off and both shows gradually became forgotten behind the less inspired, more tacky Desperate Housewives and their ilk.
