The character of Jackie in the Broadway "The Wild Party". I was not familiar with the poem before seeing the show, so his character being a rapist REALLY threw me for a loop.

In the novel version of Les Miserable... Eponine is not quite as good hearted as she appears in the musical. After Valjean disappears with Cosette, Eponine is the one who convinces Marius to go to the barricade largely because she is jealous and wants him to be killed. She also knowingly withholds information about Cosette's whereabouts from Marius by refusing to give him the letter Cosette wrote explaining where she was. She does finally give it to him after she is shot but by then there is little he can do. She also is not completely unselfishly motivated by taking the bullet for him. She even admits to him that everyone at the barricade will die but that she just wanted to make sure that she died before him.

And, Eponine3, let's not forget that Marius in the book is a bit of a turd - he forces Valjean out of Cosette's life for very personal reasons.

I think Marius is a turd in the show as well though; why are people incapable of giving the young romantic male lead any decent character?

Ramades in Aida wasn't too bad. Well, he does technically cheat on his betrothed, but besides that

Oh but he was so blaaaaand. I want a genuinely nice young romantic male lead who's not boring. Give me 'Urinetown', 'West Side Story', 'The Light In The Piazza', at least I can feel some personality going on there.

This is one of those complaints I have where people are going to prove me wrong a million times over, and I'm going to dig myself a massive hole trying to backpedal out of it, therefore I'm recognising the situation now, and will not be doing any digging or backpedalling. I shall simply say I don't like young male romantic heroes who are mean, rubbish, or boring, and I wish there were MORE who weren't mean, rubbish, or boring. ^_^

I second Angel's killing the dog, Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett, and Jamie in L5Y.

I love Roxie in Chicago (not as much as Velma, but still...), but I hate how she inspires all this false hope in Amos. I cried the first time I watched the movie (I was about nine) because I felt so sorry for him. When I saw the stage play about two years ago, the effect was even greater.

I agree with Glinda suggesting they kill Nessa. Nessa may not be likable, but jeez! It's basically Glinda's fault Nessa gets crushed by a house. Then she's standing next to the corpse doing the cutesy routine right after! She has like three seconds of remorse and then it's "ok, whateves. I killed your sister but you stole my boyfriend so I'm mad now and it's cute! Hmf!"

I really don't like that. It really changed the way I looked at Glinda for the rest of the show.

I too have to agree with Jamie in L5Y.

Also:

West Side Story- Bernado killing Riff. Tony killing Bernado. I like all three characters.

West Side Story- Anita giving the false news that Maria is dead, which ends up with Tony dying. I was so mad at her for doing that!

Cabaret- Emcee. The last line of "If You Could See Her."

Oh yeah, I always forget that Angel FRIGGIN KILLED A DOG
He's just so upbeat and the music is so catchy that I completely look over that part, lol
I also agree with Jamie and Glinda

and as for Jackie, kyleorlando, he rapes Nadine in LaChiusa's Wild Party but in the poem it's someone else (I don't think he's ever identified), Jackie passes out drunk a few minutes before the rape.
Jackie in LaChiusa's Wild Party is a pretty likeable but despicaple person. I mean he seduces Oscar away from Phil, offers cocaine to a 14 year old girl then tries to rape her.
Wow, what a prick.

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

I know this one isn't nearly as poignant, but Link Larkin from HAIRSPRAY abandons Tracy Turnblad when he realizes that associating with her will hurt his career. Of course, he then sees the error of his ways and everyone lives happily ever after, which we find out in the last five seconds of the show! haha

Come to think of it, pretty much all the characters in The Wild Party are likeable, but despicable at the same time. re: Most despicable act by a likable character?

Dramagirl, I totally agree with you. The two that came to mind for me were the Phantom and Javert. I loved the fact that Javert gives in and lets Valjean go in order to save Marius. And I like the Phantom, he's such tortured soul, but I felt that his killing Joseph Bouquet was totally unnecessary. What did Bouquet ever do to him? Ok, maybe the guy talked about the Phantom too much and I realize the Phantom thought he had to keep doing things like killing people to keep the opera company managers and workers in his thrall and intimidated by him...but still, I didn't think he needed to go that far in his terrorization of them. I mean he already had the scary reputation....

Mrs. Lovett telling a half-truth to Sweeney making him think his wife had died.
