I'm taking my mom and little brother to go see it tomarrow or the next day. My moms really excited because she loved the show, and I have my brother singing Cooties!

I am sooooo happy it's doing big numbers at the B.O. BoxOfficeguru is estimating 28-31 M opening wekend, which is more than anyone wished and hoped for ! And I really don't mind about the #1 weekend spot ! With such reviews and a fantastic word of mouth, this film is going to do steady business, long after C&L has vanished from the Top 10 !!!!
It looks like it can surpass 150 million and words cannot express my happiness !!!!

I still have a smile on my face from last night. Today I told my mom I would do WHATEVER she wanted me to as long as I can take her to go see it, but she just said: "Oh, not tonight."

What is the largest weekend opening for a musical?

Is it Grease?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I know CHICACO didn't open too big but as word of mouth got around, it became huge. Is the 11 million domestic or international box office?

Went to see Hairspray tonight and it was fab!

We wanted to get into the 6pm screening but it was SOLD OUT!!! so we had got tickets for the 8:30 showing, which also sold out! They only had it on ONE screen though, which I found odd as Harry Potter was on 4 screens and was not even showing as limited.

Hope this movie does well!

I don't understand that either. That was jsut pre-screening, though. How was its opening weekend?

ohh I think I got it. It was the biggest opening for a musical- per screen average - Since only opening in 3 theatres.

but once it went wide- it started dropping.

But I still dont know what the biggest opening for a musical is- hopefully its Hairspray.

I think it must have been Grease.

EDIT: Then again, tickets were cheaper back then...

yeah,

Sometimes they factor in inflation when statements/announcements like 'highest grossing blah blah blah' are made.

Seen the movie last night with friends.....loved it loved it loved it....can' say what character I liked best. Think my least favorite was Penny...I don't think Amanda Bynes did her justice.. She had so much more meat in the broadway version. But it could be that is what the director wanted from this version of Penny.

I have a question to all you die hard Hairspray Fans. Tracy had a french manicure. Noticed it in the scene with her mom early in the movie. I didn't think that was popular in the 60's....but I could be wrong. Also, the family was lower middle class. How was Tracy able to afford manicures?????

Think this was a faux pax in the movie. Tracy should of had short bitten nails.

But just my opinion

Tracy is poor but still groomed, or in this case 'manicured.'

French manicures were popularized in the '20's.

For fun, I'd say Tracy's were simply "Wite-Out" but that wasn't made till the late 60's.

She also managed to get her hair highlighted- so I think Wilbur slips her some money- when she needs to get pretty. :)

So can we now say that it will gross the most??

17mil perdiction??? what an understatement.

Ok, 'Save the last dance' is NOT a musical and I think 'Hairspray' will beat the 25 mil (inflation adjusted) 'Grease' opening. (!)

So I am soo excited to be able to say "highest grossing opening weekend for a musical." make it happen people!!

Yeah, I think "Lee" is gonna lose his shirt on his own site. I don't see why it shouldn't break the record, it's already almost halfway there on the first day! (plus people had to work on Friday)

While Hairspray's opening day beats out the opening weekend of any previous movie musical, to be fair, no recent musicals have opened in wide release on a Friday like this.

BTW, Box Office Mojo is reporting an even higher $11.2 million.
