"But someone I saw the show with didn't realize the things i posted before. "

SPOILER. . .
I don't understand how anyone can watch this show and not realize this. I mean they do appear on stage at the same time, singing to eachother. I suppose we are supposed to be questioning this at first, but the end of Act I, I think it is pretty clear that they are not the same person.

I haven't seen the show but had no trouble following the CD alone. Which brings me to my next question.....I'm dying to see the show as I'm a huge ALW fan. Unfortunately,I've heard sales haven't been the best. Do you think the show will hang on through the spring/summer? I noticed that tickets are on sale in ticketmaster through June. If you buy a ticket for May, for example, is it secure that you'd be able to go or could the show be cancelled before then...even though tickets have been sold. Thanks.

They will definitely try their best to keep it open until the Tonys. But I think if it doesn't win some major awards it is doomed shortly after that.

I have not been able to see this show yet nor had the time to read the book. There are a few questions I have I am hoping someone could answer for me.
1- Is the Cast Recording the complete show? (Much like the Los Angeles Sunset Boulevard?)
2-Would someone please explain why Anne's mother was sent away from the Fairley house?
3-How did Anne originaly find herself in the company of Glyde? 4-How did Glyde convince Mr Farely to give Laura's hand in marriage when he was housing Ann's mother and Ann herself?
5-How old is Glyde suppose to be?

Thanks!,
Adam

Yayjudy's answers were more complete so I am removing mine. re: is WOMAN IN WHITE hard to follow? Plot Question

The following paragraph is a very negative assessment of what I disliked about the show:
I found the show neither interesting nor compelling, and certainly not thought provoking.
Mainly I just kept thinking "why?" I despised the book and lyrics, they just seemed insipid. I am not fond of Victorian Literature though, so I think that was a problem.
I also thought the set was badly done and distracting.

The following paragraph contains what I enjoyed:
The performance by Maria Friedman was fierce, I loved it.
The character of Fosco was actually entertaining and seemed to have at least one layer, I really enjoyed the actor who played him as well.
I found most of the other main actors quite enjoyable as well.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

SPOILERS

Do you want answers from the book, or from the show? If you want book answers PM me- they get complicated, but what you're supposed to get out of the show is:
1. I'm not familier with SB from LA, BUT yes, the cast recording for WIW is pretty much the full show.
2. Anne's mother was sent away because she had an affair with Laura's father, and when Anne was born, the resemblance she had to Laura was too similar, so to disregard an suspicion anyone might have, he sent Anne and her mother away
3. Glyde was sent to look after Anne and her mother, and as Anne grew up, Glyde became attracted to her... the so the "secret" begins...
4. No one knew about Anne and her mother, except for Laura's father, and him (and some of the servants in Limmeridge house, including Laura and Marian's uncle) so Laura's father most likely made a deal with Glyde, if he kept Anne hidden, then he could have Laura's hand in marriage.
5. Not sure exactly how old Glyde is supposed to be, just like I'm not sure how old Marian is supposed to be. I'm guessing significantly older then both of then... 40?

The book answers like all these questions, though- however, the two get complicated when intertwined since the book is a lot more intricate and detailed. Thinking about this too much confuses me, but I hope that nonsensicical rambling helped...

smartpenguin78- haha, thanks- "confusing" and "complete" are easily interchangable... but, whatever, I try

Actually, Glyde wasn't sent anywhere. Anne's mother was sent to Blackwater House to work for him.

seems like people either love this show or hate it for the most part. But then, don't people generally either love or hate Webber's music? I've only heard the music and love it and, as I said before, really want to see the show before it goes! So, here's hoping it hangs on til at least June. I'm new to the board as of today and enjoy seeing your responses!

I forgot to mention that, I actually enjoy several of Webber's scores.
I really liked the music of this one, very much. My problem was all about the book and lyrics.

I was advised not to read the book before I saw the play but being the devil that I am - I read just enough to make sure I stayed with the plot!

Let's hope it stays open for awhile. I got notified through the mail that "All Shook Up" was cancelled and to send in my ticket for a refund.

Make sure all that are interested to see it soon just in case!! (but wait until the 17th when Ball is scheduled to be in!LOL)

For me it wasn't necessarily that it was hard to follow...it just didn't keep my attention. I thought the show dragged. That being said, I enjoyed some of the music. I'm not really sure that it has much of a life...it just isn't all that interesting. Who knows....maybe when the tourists return in the spring there will be a turnaround in ticket sales. It is certainly not the one of the worse things I have ever seen and I think that there are definite things to value: the performances alone I think are worth giving it a try.

Woman In White is melodrama disuguised as suspense. Great performance, lousy score, stupid story.

BobbyB - I could never listen to the CR. Now that I've seen the show, I enjoy the CR much more...

SPOILER

During the intermission people kept thinking Anne and Laura were the same person...like split personalities. That would also make Marian crazy because the three of them were together...The lady was also saying how she didn't trust the "fat guy." Thought it was funny.

No, very easy to follow. It does not stray much from the book. But I got dizzy with that changing scenery.

So, actually I have a question.

Doesn't Fosco where a red...robe....during You Can Get Away With Anything? Because Marcus had one costume pretty much...

Also, the cast seemed to be shaking his hand, congratulating him...was this past Wed. his first show?

Anway, during this scene the rat would walk across is shoulders. So finally he picked it up with the destination hand and held it up like, "There we go!"

Then it walked back and it stopped behind his neck. He twisted down and the rat slid to his hand.

He said "No, no, no" and "shame, shame, shame" so much. He was having a ball with it though! And so was the audience!

yeah, Wednesday was his first show-- which might be the reason for his lack of costumes...

Fosco wears a red patterned smoking jacket in his final scene.

From what I've read, I believe the Wednesday matinee was Mr. Marcus' first performance as Fosco. Norman Large had been playing in previously

Wow.

Yeah, I was sad re: is WOMAN IN WHITE hard to follow? Plot Question

But he was quite great...but it seemed weird - the lack of costumes ...and the cast making a big fuss of him (though he deserved it!)...

Double Post!

Anyway, I really couldn't see Norman Large in that role...based on his others.

Not that that means much. Updated On: 1/14/06 at 01:42 AM
