Source: The Hollywood Reporter January 10, 2007

Theater director Phyllida Lloyd is in negotiations to make her feature directorial debut on Mamma Mia!, an adaptation of the popular ABBA musical, created by Judy Craymer and Catherine Johnson, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The musical adaptation will be produced by Universal Pictures and Tom Hanks' production company Playtone. Lloyd directed the stage version of the musical in London and New York, and she's well known in theater and opera circles for helming productions in London, Paris and Toronto of shows like "Six Degrees of Separation," "The Taming of the Shrew," "La Boheme," "Carmen" and "Ring Cycle."

Who's Laurie Wells? Universal Pictures won't be casting any unknown for the lead in a multi-million dollar movie. Also, by having the stage-version's director (a novice to film directing) direct this is guaranteed failure. Does the film-version of the musical-version of THE PRODUCERS come to mind?

I say they get Tom Hanks to direct this himself and adapt the show for film instead of filming the stage-version in cinematic terms. Worked for CHICAGO and DREAMGIRLS.

Laurie Wells is the current Donna Sheridan in the touring Mamma Mia. I saw her in Chicago and she's an incredible actress and singer, and I've seen Mamma Mia several other times. I think the studios would be better picking someone who actually has the talent to do it as opposed to a well-known celebrity who can't sing or has no experience with it.

There are celebrities who can sing. *gasp*

...or has no experience with it.

That's what rehearsals and practicing are for?

I know there are celebrities who can dance and sing, I loved Chicago and was impressed by both Renee and Catherine. I'm just saying that there's a tendency to automatically go right for the big name just because it is a big name, regardless of their singing/dancing ability, when there is such a large pool out there of talented people who work their butts off without any recogition. I would just be nice to see a new face out there.

The average movie-goer would not go see a movie (a musical, at that) starring someone they don't know. I'm an avid musical theater fan yet I don't even know her! The producers are in the business of making money. They will not make this movie purely for the love of the material.

for some reason every time i have seen the show, Goldie Hawn pops into my head, dont know why. I suppose the studio would think she's too old.

I know she's not a bankable star but Olivia Newton-John would be a wonderful Donna.

Heck...even if she showed up in the Broadway cast or London cast I would be happy.

Oooh... good call. Goldie Hawn could be quite good.

I keep hearing about Madonna's name being thrown around though for Donna. Maybe Madonna could play the trashy friend, Tanya.

Rosie O'Donnell or Bette Midler as Rosie?

Dirtyrottengirl suggested to me earlier Rosie O'Donnell and Vanessa Williams as the friends. That would be great. I think Madonna would be fine and bring folks in.

Oooo....Pfeiffer is a good choice. She's the right age for it too. Wonder how her voice is holding up. I also like the Vanessa Williams suggestion. Rosie as Rosie? Yeah...her name has been mentioned for that part since before it even opened on Broadway. I think she'd be fine.
