Moon Festival Alice to Open FUNCompany's New Season at MET
The original work is presented in partnership with the Asian American Center of Frederick.
This fall, Maryland Ensemble Theatre's FUNCompany invites audiences down the rabbit hole—but this isn't quite the Wonderland they know! Created in partnership with The Asian American Center of Frederick, the new MET original Moon Festival Alice runs September 26 through October 18 at Maryland Ensemble Theatre.
In the midst of a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, a curious child tumbles into a magical world filled with unexpected characters and wonders drawn from Asian folklore, festivals and modern Asian American life. Inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Moon Festival Alice transforms a familiar journey into a playful new adventure created for Frederick families.
The production is directed by MET Associate Artistic Director Julie Herber*, who also serves as lead deviser and Costume Designer.
'Like Alice, this production began with curiosity,' said Herber. 'We wanted to take the sense of wonder and discovery that families recognize from the original story and follow it somewhere new—into a world shaped by Asian and Asian American traditions, stories and experiences. Creating it alongside members of our community has made the process especially meaningful, and we can't wait to welcome audiences into the world we've built together.'
The cast features Ember Pak as Alice, joined by Alexander Ose, Helen Cheng-Mao, Alex Ramos and Hazel Pak. Angelica Ramos and Sofia Mordkofsky serve as swings.
Behind the scenes, scenic designer Myer Kim and assistant scenic designer Ryan Michalowicz help bring Alice's new world to life. The production team also includes lighting designer Kaylie Richmond, props designer Lori Boyd*, sound designer Shayden Jamison*, original Music Composer Angelica Ramos and stage manager Madeline Mobley.
With its imaginative storytelling, original music and a world created through collaboration, Moon Festival Alice offers young audiences—and the grown-ups accompanying them—a chance to experience a familiar adventure from an entirely new perspective. It's a story about following your curiosity, finding wonder in the unexpected and discovering just how many directions a rabbit hole can lead.
