When Marlene celebrates her promotion to the top of a London employment agency, she invites all of her heroines from art and history to join her: a fearless Victorian-era explorer, a Japanese Emperor's mistress turned Buddhist nun, a woman who may have indeed been the Pope, the Canterbury Tales' obedient Clerk's wife and a Flemish peasant-avenger who's been to Hell and back.
