*** DIRECTOR'S NOTE ***

I am looking for a solid ensemble of very different men, all of whom are willing to commit to in-depth character study and work as part of a well-oiled machine: We will rehearse three times a week until mid-February, and possibly more just before Tech. (Probably two evenings during the week and one weekend day). Due to the nature of this play, everyone will be needed for all rehearsals, and numerous conflicts may affect casting - be open about your availability at auditions, and let me decide if I can make it work. I look forward to beginning 2011 with a classic American play, and an excellent acting ensemble.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

#1 Foreman : Comfortable as a leader/teacher; well-educated, open-minded; Probably a bit formal; very well-organized.

#2 Somewhat shy; he is used to being a "follower". Probably a student (college / graduate), wears glasses; often intimidated

#3 A very angry, intolerant middle-aged man; probably working class with limited education. Must have strong stage presence and control.

#4 Very well educated and diplomatic; probably upper middle class / executive. Excellent speaking voice; enjoys a healthy and intelligent debate.

#5 Younger, quiet; grew up poor and struggling; feels unworthy to be heard. Tries to go unnoticed, but gets caught up in the debate.

#6 A slow thinker; usually acts and speaks tentatively; easily persuaded, but he changes his mind ALOT. Can get overwhelmed by too much information.

#7 Loud, flashy salesman; huge sports fan - can be a bully. Impatient and quick to judge; not necessarily very smart.

#8 Gentle, diplomatic leader - strong willed and easily charismatic; Likeable. Understands the power of language AND the seriousness of this decision.

#9 The oldest juror; a gentle and intelligent man. Prefers calm and quiet, but willing to stand up for what he believes.

#10 A bigot whose anger overwhelms everyone around him; lashes out constantly; Disappointed with his own life and bitterly attacks everyone else.

#11 An immigrant - speaks with a slight accent; Feels like an outsider, and hesitant to speak up. Initially quiet, but finds his voice during this debate.

#12 Slick, shiny advertising exec; superficially charming, but not much substance; Wants to be seen as a "good guy", but really wants a fast and easy verdict, and then a stiff drink..
