About the New Ensemble Version
Initially conceived as a solo museum-tour performance, Made in America? now arrives in Atlanta as a newly reimagined ensemble piece. This expanded version breaks open the narrative, distributing its voices across a dynamic cast who collectively embody the play’s intersecting stories of globalization, industrial decline, personal memory, and the politics of cultural ownership.
At the center is a single brick—“the last one ever made in America”—transformed into an artwork by Chinese artist Terence Cao. Through this object, the play interrogates the entanglements between labor, nationalism, commodity, and grief. What begins as a guided lecture fractures into a theatrical mosaic that invites the audience to confront who gets to define American identity, and who is erased in the process.
