Center for Puppetry Arts Presents PETER PAN, 4/5-5/27

This spring, Center for Puppetry Arts will offer Atlanta audiences a new twist on the time-honored classic Peter Pan. Amateur inventor Wendy Darling and her brothers, John and Michael, travel to Neverland with the impetuous Peter and his fairy companion, Tinkerbell. Performances begin on April 5 and will run through May 27.

Adventures abound as the children romp with the Lost Boys, swim with mermaids, rescue the resourceful Princess Tigerlily and battle the nefarious Captain Hook. Following the novel’s classic episodes, Peter Pan celebrates the carefree spirit of childhood and the value of following your dreams.

Director Michael Haverty’s adaptation utilizes blacklight puppetry, projected animations and filmed shadow puppetry. According to press notes, this vibrant, colorful world invites audiences on an imaginative voyage across London, to Neverland and back. Puppets, designed by Jason von Hinezmeyer and built in the Center's Puppet Shop, capture the youthful energy of the much-loved characters. An original score by Jeffrey Bützer complements the designs, featuring an array of musical instruments including accordion, toy piano, saxophone, cello, flute, guitar, glockenspiel and more.

To keep the high-flying tale grounded, Center for Puppetry Arts brings an air of authenticity to its version of Peter Pan: Princess Tigerlily, the daughter of the chief of the Neverland tribe, speaks Cherokee. The Center for Puppetry Arts worked with the Cherokee Nation Education Services and the Translation Department of Education Services to translate Tigerlily’s dialogue into the language for the show.

Peter Pan is presented in Mainstage Theater April 5 through May 27. Show times are as follows:

Tuesday – Friday: 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Saturday: 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Sunday*: 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

*The Center is closed Sunday, April 8 for the Easter holiday.

Single show tickets include museum admission as well as the Create-A-Puppet Workshop, where kids can make their own Cranky Crocodile Hand Puppet.
