Actor and activist George Takei was five years old when his father told him the family was going on a long vacation to a place called Arkansas.

"It was an adventure. I thought everyone took vacations by leaving home in a railroad car with sentries, armed soldiers, at both ends of the car."

If the young boy wasn't quite grasping the true meaning of what was going on during the three years his family was imprisoned in the country where they were born for the offense of being of Japanese descent, the senior Takei wants to make sure this dark chapter of America's past is not forgotten.

Last season he made his Broadway debut in ALLEGIANCE, a musical drama inspired by his experiences during World War II and its aftermath.

In the moving video, Takei pays a visit to the site where the Heart Mountain, Wyoming internment camp was located, the prison that provided ALLEGIANCE's main setting.

George Takei returns to the New York stage this spring, playing Reciter in Classic Stage Company's revival of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's PACIFIC OVERTURES, to be directed by Tony Award winner (and 2016 Tony Award nominee) John Doyle, who this season takes the reins as Artistic Director of the vital East Village theater company.

Performances for PACIFIC OVERTURES begin April 5, 2017. Additional casting and creative team to be announced at a later date. Visit classicstage.org.
