Tony Winner Idina Menzel to Release Christmas Album Later this Year

Among accepting a beer bottle-shaped Tony Award and performing numbers from FROZEN, IF/THEN, and more at her highly-anticipated gig at Radio City Music Hall last night, stage superstar Idina Menzel also made a surprise announcement. Despite the fact that she's Jewish (her own joke,) the Tony winner is currently hard at work on releasing a Chrismas album - which should hit shelves later this year!

Menzel's first foray into holiday music, despite FROZEN's 'Let It Go' dominating the sales chart last season, will feature the original song 'December Prayer,' she confirmed.

"I know I'm Jewish, but a lot of famous Jewish people have written Christmas songs, so I'm going to try to have a lot of their songs on the album," she said last night, according to The Hollywood Reporter, adding: "I'm glad I'm not singing about Jesus."

Last night was Menzel's first time performing at the historic venue, marking her first New York City concert performance since her sold out show last year at Carnegie Hall.

Menzel recently starred as the voice of Elsa in Disney's animated smash Frozen. The film's Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated single "Let it Go" topped the singles charts around the globe and has been certified platinum. Garnering huge critical acclaim, Menzel reached superstardom on Broadway with her Tony Award-winning performance as Elphaba, the misunderstood green girl, in the blockbuster Wicked and in her Tony-nominated role as Maureen in the revolutionary Rent. Menzel also appeared as Sheila in the Encores! production of Hair and starred as Amneris in Broadway's Aida. In London, she originated the role of Elphaba in the West End production of Wicked and received the Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Other Off-Broadway credits include Michael John LaChiusa's musical See What I Wanna See, directed by Ted Sperling at The Public Theater, the pre-Broadway production of Rent, and The Vagina Monologues.
