THEATER TALK welcomes Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper, creators of Broadway's hit Kinky Boots. The fun and revealing new interview premieres Friday, May 10, 2013 at 1 AM (Saturday morning) on Thirteen/PBS, and repeats in the New York metro area on CUNY TV* Saturday at 8:30 PM, Sunday at 12:30 PM, and Monday at 7:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 7:30 PM.

Lauper, a newcomer to Broadway, comes in for admiration and glowing praise from Fierstein, a theater veteran (Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, Hairspray, Newsies). She reveals to co-hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins that, over the show's four-and-a-half year gestation period, "I felt like a little rat ... I asked so many questions that I drove everybody crazy." Her inspiration? The score for West Side Story. Fierstein talks of Lauper's dedication to the characters and the actors who play them, writing and re-writing to ensure their authenticity in song.

Fierstein starts calling Lauper "Christina," which is explained in the interview. And the show takes a really kinky turn when Fierstein presents Riedel with a pair of drag-queen "kinky boots." "They give you a feeling of power, right?" asks Fierstein. "You know, Michael, most transvestites are straight."

Next week: Season's End Critics' Panel with Ben Brantley of The New York Times, Peter Marks of The Washington Post and Joan Rivers of The Beverly Hills Courier.
