The Met Features Julia Margaret Cameron Works Today

By:

Julia Margaret Cameron features 35 works by of one of the greatest portraitists in the history of photography. Cameron (1815-1879) blended an unorthodox technique, a deeply spiritual sensibility, and a Pre-Raphaelite-inflected aesthetic to create a gallery of vivid portraits and a mirror of the Victorian soul. The exhibition (on view from August 19, 2013 through January 5, 2014) features masterpieces including portraits of well-known subjects such as the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, scientist Sir John Herschel, and philosopher Thomas Carlyle.

Also on view:
Brush Writing in the Arts of Japan (August 17, 2013 - January 12, 2014), showcases some 180 masterworks of brush-inscribed Japanese characters dating from the 11th century to the present. This exhibition takes a close look at the original gestural movement marked in each work by analyzing the applied pressure, speed, and rhythm that are said to be the reflection of the artist's state of mind. It includes some 20 loans, many of which have never before been on public display.
