Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the Long Island summer arts day camp whose alumni include Natalie Portman, Seth Rudetsky, Mariah Carey and many other stars, announces its Festival Concerts lineup for the season. These are a special feature of the Center: private, on-site daily educational performances by distinguished artists for students in Usdan's 1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater. Many of the artists will also teach workshops and master classes during the season.
Featured artists include: MUSIC: On Monday June 27, opening day: - renowned jazz artists Jimmy and Tootie Heath; The Tokyo String Quartet, (June 28) in their 18th performance at Usdan; Jane Monheit (June 29) -- jazz singer/Usdan alumna, whose newest album, Home, has won raves for "The honeyed whiskey gorgeousness of her voice. superbly realized (Jazz Times); Arturo O'Farrill and his acclaimed Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra (June 30); the Selig/Blumberg/Stowe trio, baritone Jesse Blumberg (a soloist at last year's Usdan Gala, most recently returned from singing the Leonard Bernstein Mass at London's Royal Festival Hall) with colleagues in a program of classical and contemporary music (July 1); The Art of Tango (July 6) a quintet featuring three renowned musicians from Argentina, celebrating the music of Astor Piazzolla; ); Ensemble ACJW (July 7), distinguished musicians of The Academy, a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute, playing music for oboe, bassoon, and piano; Genghis Barbie Horn Quartet (July 11): a rising ensemble of four post-feminist French horn players, playing everything from Queen to Beyonce; Vincent Lionti, principal violist of the MET Orchestra, conducting Usdan Orchestras III ‘and IV (July 15); violinist Rachel Lee (winner of the 2009 Usdan Distinguished Young Artist award) with cellist Nicholas Canellakis (July 18) and on August 1, classical and folk guitar music with Rene Izquierdo and Elina Chekan, who have concertized together throughout the world.Usdan's daily concerts are presented every weekday at the Center's 1,000-seat McKinley Amphitheater. Concerts are presented at 12:00 Noon, and again at 12:30 PM. The artist concerts expose Usdan students to the best of music, dance and theater while they are pursuing their studies in these fields. After several weeks of attending these artist performances, students take over and perform onstage themselves. In addition, there are on-site exhibits displaying the work of visual arts students.
Usdan's Long Island campus includes 70 award-winning studios and theaters, each providing an inspiring collaboration with the Center's magnificent woodland. Usdan is a beneficiary agency of UJA-Federation of New York, and the Center is chartered by the Regents of the State of New York.
