The sold-out black-tie event at The Players on Gramercy Park featured performances by Elise McCann and Ainsley Melham.
The Australian Theatre Festival NYC celebrated a sold-out 2026 Spring Gala at The Players on Gramercy Park, honoring three exceptional Australians whose work continues to shape Broadway and New York’s performing arts landscape: Grammy-nominated composer and music director Carmel Dean, Downtown Dance Factory Founder and Artistic Director Hanne Larsen, and acclaimed Broadway performer Ainsley Melham. The Festival continues to be led by Founding Co-Artistic & Executive Directors Mark Barford & Connor Delves. See photos!
Bringing together leaders, performers and supporters from the Broadway, Off-Broadway and the wider New York arts community, the black-tie event celebrated the growing impact of Australian artists on the international stage while successfully raising crucial funds in support of the Australian Theatre Festival NYC’s 2026 season and annual festival this September in New York City.
Hosted by Elise McCann (Groundhog Day The Musical, Matilda The Musical), the evening featured special performances and appearances from leading artists across the theatre industry, including Amelia Cormack (Beau! The Musical, Come From Away, Hadestown), and Charles Head (Juilliard), as well as McCann and Melham, who performed during the ceremony.
The glamorous evening drew a distinguished crowd, including honoree introductions from Isabelle McCalla (Schmigadoon!, The Prom), Benjamin Howes (Mary Poppins, Shrek The Musical, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), and Jane Abramson (Michael Cassel Group).
The 2026 honorees represent a powerful cross-section of Australian excellence across musical theatre, performance and arts education:
Grammy-nominated composer, arranger and music director Carmel Dean has built an internationally celebrated career spanning Broadway, the West End and beyond, with credits including The Notebook, Funny Girl, If/Then, American Idiot and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Her original musicals, including Renascence and Well-Behaved Women, have established her as one of Australia’s most acclaimed musical theatre writers working internationally today.
Hanne Larsen was recognized for her extraordinary contribution to arts education in New York City through Downtown Dance Factory, the influential Tribeca-based institution she co-founded in 2009. Under Larsen’s leadership, DDF has grown into one of New York’s leading inclusive dance organizations, serving thousands of students and helping train the next generation of performers for Broadway and elite arts institutions.
Broadway performer Ainsley Melham was honored for his acclaimed work both in Australia and the United States, including his celebrated Broadway performances in Disney’s Aladdin and the new Broadway musical BOOP! The Musical. Widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading musical theatre exports, Melham’s career has spanned major productions including Pippin, Wicked, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Merrily We Roll Along.
Now in its seventh year, the Australian Theatre Festival NYC celebrates and showcases Australian stories & artists in New York City. They aim to create opportunities for an exchange of culture, cultivate the development of Australian artists and their work, and connect Australians living in New York.
