At a celebration lunch was held at New York City's swanky Four Seasons Restaurant yesterday, May 26, in honor of Chita Rivera's Tony nominated performance in Broadway's The Visit. Scroll down for photos of the festivities!
Hosted by Liz Smith and Edgar Bronfman, Jr., special guests included Joel Grey, Bernadette Peters, Bebe Neuwirth, Tyne Daly, Tommy Tune, Tovah Feldshuh, Ben Vereen, Isabel and Ruben Toledo, Laura Osnes, Steven Boyer, Andy Carl, Laura Michelle Kelly, Jean Doumanian, Harriet Harris, Judy Kuhn, Adriane Lenox, Micah Stock, Max Von Essen, Sydney Lucas, Brad Oscar, Geneva Carr, Beth Malone, Sarah Stiles and more, along with Chita Rivera and the cast of The Visit, as well as director John Doyle, and playwright Terrence McNally.
According to Page Six, one guest -- British restaurant owner Phil Winser -- was so over the moon with Rivera's presence that he jumped into the restaurant's famous decorative pool. "Well, [Tony nominee] Sting's not here, so someone has to act like a rock star," he said.
Along with her Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, Rivera has also received a Drama Desk Award nomination, and an Outer Critic Circle Award nomination for her role in The Visit. Earlier this month, she was the winner of the Drama League's Distinguished Performance Award.
Rivera has won two Tony Awards and received seven additional Tony nominations. Her career highlights include starring roles in Bye Bye Birdie, The Rink (Tony Award), Chicago, Jerry's Girls, Kiss of the Spider Woman (Tony Award), The Dancer's Life, recent revivals of The Mystery of Edwin Drood andNine, and the original Broadway casts of Guys and Dolls, Can-Can, Seventh Heaven and Mr. Wonderful. On tour she has starred in The Rose Tattoo, Call Me Madam, Sweet Charity, Zorba. She was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Kennedy Center Honor.
Based on the satirical play by Friedrich Du?rrenmatt as adapted by Maurice Valency, The Visit is about greed, love, and one woman's carefully plotted revenge. The oft-widowed Claire Zachanassian (Chita Rivera), richest woman in the world, returns to the hardship- stricken town of her birth. The locals pray that her wealth will bring them a new lease on life, but her arrival carries a dreadful price. Sardonic and morally complex, The Visit asks "What can your heart afford?"
