The Obie Award-winning Soho Rep will follow up last season's critically-acclaimed productions of The Flying Machine's Frankenstein (four Drama Desk nominations) and Mark Schultz's Everything Will Be Different (Oppenheimer Award-winner) with the world-premiere of Peninsula, which will begin previews on January 12th prior to the official press opening of January 14 at Soho Rep (46 Walker Street). The show will run through February 4th.

"In a country roiled by civil unrest, a couple finds their relationship falling apart. Sex, lies and political violence combine and converge in unexpected ways," state press notes about the play, which is written and directed by Madelyn Kent. "In the foreign, yet strangely familiar land of Peninsula, the shops are closing, the Priest is seduced, and the Doctor has been called away to the authorities. Flora's marriage dissolves, unleashing political and intimate repercussions. Peninsula is a deeply felt response to what it means to live in a culture of contentment surrounded by raging violence.

Madelyn Kent's plays Nomads, Black Milk, Crawl and Burrow have been presented at New York Theatre Workshop, The Public Theatre and Soho Rep, where in 1998 she was a member of the theatre's first Writer/Director Lab. In 2001 she founded Shufu Theatre, presenting work developed through improvisations with Japanese women. Evolved from ESL classes, these collaborations have yielded over thirty plays, two of which, Sachiko and Enoshima Island are included in the anthology New Downtown Theatre edited by Mac Wellman and Young Jean Lee to be published by the University of Minnesota early next year. She has directed several Shufu pieces at The Little Theatre, P.S. 122, WAX, and The Flea Theatre. Her approach has been deeply influenced by her long-term study of Japanese Butoh dance in both Japan and New York.

Directed by Madelyn - the cast of Peninsula includes: Louis Cancelmi, David Chandler, Tim Cummings, Curzon Dobell, and Marielle Heller. The design team for Peninsula is as follows: Lighting Designer - Matt Frey, Costume Designer - Theresa Squire, Set Designer - Narelle Sissons, and Sound Designer - Kenta Nagai.

"Under the leadership of Artistic Director Daniel Aukin and Executive Director Alexandra Conley, Soho Rep developmental theater company is dedicated to cultivating and producing new and unconventional plays. They perform to one of the youngest adult audiences in New York City, with over three-quarters of its audience aged 18-35. Over the last six seasons, Soho Rep productions have garnered five OBIE Awards," state press notes.

Performances of the play run Thursdays - Saturdays at 7:30pm, with the following added performances: Wednesday, January 25, Tuesday, January 31 & Wednesday February 1. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling Smarttix at 212-868-4444 or online at
